On the heels of my 'food is my friend' journal yesterday - I experienced an interesting realization today. I'm sure this too is likely written elsewhere as I rarely have an original thought so here it is: 'time to dissolve old partnerships.'
It began with me being cold and thinking 'mmm... some nice hot chocolate would be good today ...' - I have some Swiss Miss - 25 cal a serving if you can hold it to 6oz only .. my mug holds 24oz.. I compromised at 12. You do the math :-)
Anyway - while the water was heating I found myself thinking 'hmm... what can I have with the hot chocolate? A cookie? Peanut butter sandwich?' Before I knew it I was standing in front of the fridge scanning for ideas.
You get where this is going already, I bet.
I wasn't really hungry - I just wanted hot chocolate (and had thought about hot tea, hot water with lemon, etc - had finally settled on hot chocolate as the thing that would really Hit the Spot.)
So why did I feel the need to partner it with food? Wouldn't the hot chocolate be enough?
Would I even enjoy it if I were adding something else?
I then found myself renegotiating ~ ala ~ "Well, if you do have the tea instead you have 50cals left for a ...(something else)"
And at that wonderful second, I reminded myself to ask: How would a slim healthy person handle this?
When they show a slim woman in the commercial enjoying her International coffee moment, is she holding a cookie in her hand?
Nope. She's enjoying that beverage. Time for me to learn to do the same.
And that's when I decided: Time to start dissolving old partnerships.
Like:
Meat & potatos Hot chocolate and cookies Chips & dip Soup and crackers Waffles and Syrup (I had a waffle this morning, no syrup, it was great ~ would probably have gone really well with the hot chocolate..whoops!)
As I never claim to be the smoothest spoon in the drawer, I'm sure you too have a few ... would love to hear them.
Happy Sunday, Bella

Talk about timing, finished all my Sunday chores and sat down to read FS with my Cinnamon Sugar Cookie (flavored coffee) I put a big spoon of heavy whipping cream in it and it satified that sweet craving for me too.

Bread and butter - jam is so much tastier and you can get by for about 10 calories instead of 100 from butter!

Yup, Paula - so true! Terri I'm trying to figure out which of the partners I would keep in Biscuits & gravy... am I still confining my foods too much? I think that's why lately I'm acting like a 5 year old when it comes to eating - I don't want my foods mixed together while I'm trying to figure out 'which ones' I really LIKE and want to keep and enjoy versus which ones I've been eating out of years of habit. Somedays, this feels like I finally woke from a coma - I guess in a way - I have.

cheese and crackers, syrup or jam and sausage, toast & eggs, cake and icecream (they just went totally bankrupt). This is a good journal for me today because I am skipping breakfast and lunch and have been thinking about pairing my green tea with something all day but I have made it and only a few hours to go. Thanks for this!

I have an opinion on confining foods. It's a really good topic for tomorrow's journal. Since you have gone iinto stealth mode I need to remember better to search out your journal entries. :)
