Your Waist-to-Height Ratio: A Better Tool to Measure Your Health

But waist-to-height ratio isn’t just simpler; it’s also better. Researcher Margaret Ashwell made the case for this measurement last year after studying the health of 300,000 patients. She found that waist-to-height ratio is better than BMI at predicting diabetes, hypertension, heart attacks and strokes.

BMI doesn’t take into account lean body mass versus body fat, so a very muscular person could end up classified as overweight and at-risk. Waist-to-height ratio does a better job of avoiding that problem by including the waist, where abdominal fat lives. Abdominal fat seems to be the worst kind when it comes to disease risk.

How to measure
To be healthy, your waist circumference should be less than half of your height. For example, if you are a 5-foot (60 inches) female, your waist circumference should be 30 inches or smaller. Keeping that ideal ratio will reduce your risk of disease — and increase your life expectancy.

To get an accurate waist measurement, don’t just measure where your pants sit — and avoid the urge to suck in your gut like you’re in a photo. Instead, relax, and start the tape measure just above one of your hip bones and below your lowest rib, keep it level at the belly button all the way around. You want the tape measure to be snug, but not compressing your body.

If the measurement is more than half of your height, use that as motivation. You can make smart choices, lose that harmful abdominal fat and give yourself a longer, healthier life in the process.

Excellent. That visceral fat is the absolute worst and the most difficult to lose as you age.

I totally agree! The waist to height ratio is just so much simpler to understand and focuses on the really dangerous kind of fat. When I started at 200+ pounds my waist was 42.5 inches 😵 and now it’s down to 31.5, so at 62 inches tall I’m almost there! Great post!

Love this. Easy to understand. Mine is almost exactly half. I need to be less than that- so it makes sense. I'm a little surprised that it is half my height though since I've still got 45 pounds to go.

So, I don't need to use BMI and figure out the math?!? Really? kay, seriously, I like this measure because it's easier and a better indicator of health then populace # like BMI. #doyouwalk? #doyoumove #ifnot...start!

I'm at less than half now. Took a while. Maybe you have more muscle than you thing, Princesa? Lol. Explains the strength. 😉

I did take a quiz- what superhero are you? and I got the HULK... while the other girls got wonder woman. I think it was based on my temper though. 😁💪🏻😆

Great post. Someone posted it last year, and it is my main goal to get my waist to height ratio down!! Would so much rather just be a foot taller!!

good suggestion. Too funny though our work health screening they "measured our waist" Would not give me a minute so I could take off a heavy chamois shirt (our office is always freezing) so 2 layers of clothing and where it bunched up and actually measured around my lower rib cage adding 8 inches to my waist -- I checked my measurement when I came home!!! Useless.

This seems like a good standard. I've got a ways to go!

So I just need to get 2 feet taller to be healthy! 📏 I’ll start adding my current height to my daily weigh in.

Once people figure the formula out they'll be buying stretching racks....."Hey I'm 1/2 inch taller then last week". . . .."I can eat more stuff" hehehehe.....sorry folks it is football Saturday so my mind is awash in fun-s-i-e-s.

29.5 inch and 68 inches tall. Just did the measurements, but I am certainly not underweight. My bones are big and I rapidly gain muscle. Guess it isn't a very accurate health measure for me. But fun!! Princess, maybe we tall girls get bonus inches to spare! 😁

Thank you for this! I'll use this for the woman I'm helping. We can't use weight as a guide because weighing someone in a wheel chair is problematic. Measurements are all we really have. Another stellar post!

I think that's saying you are where you should be, Melissa. I'm 34 and 68- so exactly half and I need to be under that to be healthy.... I guess. IDK. I just look in the mirror and know I'm still overweight so I'll have to go by that for now. ;)

I feel like we need a killer rabbit sighting with all this talk of the bones. . . ."Just look at them!" MP and The Holy Grail

So, I need to lose 10" off my waist or grow about a foot taller.
