Pedometers or step counting apps on your phone can be really useful. As you cut calories, you have less energy and can make up for less calories in by conserving energy in your daily activities. NEAT or non exercise activated thermogenesis is where most of your calorie expenditure comes from. You may sit more, stand less, or have less energy when you exercise. If you're able to track your steps and how long you stand throughout the day, you can avoid plateauing. I see many people frustrated by their lack of weight loss despite the same calorie intake. Keeping your activities constant throughout the week/month can help you avoid that.

Very true! Also, even if your workout may suffer, still go work out. At least it’s burning more kcal than sitting around the house ;).

Good advice! In the midst of the most dramatic weight loss I’ve had, I watched steps closely and pushed the number up and up. Led to more walks, hikes, and runs!

NEAT is a very important, yet overlooked topic. I've been using Google Fit on Android (free) to track steps and activity. It gives me enough data to not need to wear one of those fitness watches.

Yes I have come to the conclusion my NEAT allows me to eat more than the average 5’1 female

I'm considering some sort of measuring device - any recco? Fitbit?

@Bella - I bought a Fitbit Inspire HR (there are several, so this one was a great fit for me). It tracks steps, activities, sleep, heart rate and tells you to get up and walk every hour (according to your settings). After 5 months, I'm not even tired of it. I wear it everyday. It sure does keep me motivated. I challenge myself to do more. Your fitbit account online lays your daily/weekly/monthy progress out for you so you can stay on track.

My teen wants the Fitbit inspire. She says it’s similar to my Apple Watch with all the things it can do.

What cutting machine said. If you don't feel like spending the money just download the Google fit app and keep it in your pocket.

Just an FYI, I would not recommend using these trackers to figure out maintenance calories. Google Fit under estimates calories burned, FitBit over estimates, etc. As Diablo mentioned "Keeping your activities constant throughout the week/month can help you avoid that" is key as to not move less when consuming fewer calories. Since my job has me in a seat most of the day, I use the app as a way to measure footsteps and physical activities to ensure I am not using less NEAT when consuming less calories.
