@philrmcknight's Journal, 02 Jun 20

What y'all working on during quarantine? Life at Casa de Phil has not changed too much, still working the farm/ranch, still homeschooling Lilly, the big difference is that the wife is teaching classes from home instead of having to drive and sit in front of classes. Still, I feel that acquiring new skills, or brushing up on skills you already have is a good idea and since I got a new camera for my birthday I decided to enroll in a couple of online photography courses to take my thirty year amateur hobby to the next level with some courses taught by professional photographers. So far I've gotten a mixed bag, one of the junior instructors in one of the courses doesn't really seem to know much, and I've found that pretty common when dealing with other photo enthusiasts, to wit, a lot of people try to pass themselves off professional or expert when they really don't have the skill set or experience, let alone credentials to do so. It's kind of difficult to set through critiques from a person of whom you know you have more experience and knowledge. Sadly, I really can't take anything this particular person has to say seriously, but I listen and refrain from rudeness, it's possible to learn from their mistakes, but what's mildly irritating is the unjustified know-it-all attitude. Thankfully this particular person is adjunct and working as an assistant and isn't the main instructor, so it's not all bad and I've picked up some great instruction notwithstanding. No pics today, I'll make some LOL's or memes some other time, I'm getting ready to hike over to a blooming Magnolia tree and take some macro shots as part of this weeks field assignment for one of the classes, I shot the muddy Angelina river yesterday, got some good shots, but they would have came out better if I had a polarizing lens filter, that's one of the drawbacks of photography, there's always another accessory to buy! Have a great day, friends.

great way to spend your time, Phil. i have never had a great eye for photography, but my wife and kids all have the artist's touch. and i 100% agree with you about continuing to learn - i swear by that until the day i die - that's the joy of it all - leads to wonder and beauty. my job requires i learn and certify constantly, so on top of working, i am learning, and will be starting my final course for my masters the end of june. please share pics when you get them!

I signed up for viewbug.com. Do you know about them? It is a photography community withe amateurs and professionals! I once in a while post a photo to see how others react to it! When I see great pictures from others, I try to learn from them just by analyzing the picture and using their techniques. My ambition is not to be a professional photographer by the way. But I like to make decent pictures during our hiking trips. Looking forward to seeing your pictures here!

I really enjoy fototripper and Nick Page for photography tips on YouTube. That's great to take your hobby to the next level! Hoping to see some of your pics on here!!! Not much has changed for me during quarantine, still working. In my spare time I am studying for my certification as a personal trainer.

I've got a viewbug profile, all my stuff on there was taken with my old Canon Rebel xs, I got a 7D for my birthday, and I've been posting on Guru Shots.

I'm an amateur photographer too! I don't claim any special skills. I just enjoy taking and sharing photos of the things I see on my journey.

I feel ya, Lonnie! I'm an amateur photographer with thirty years experience. I don't want to work as a professional photographer, I just want to get professional level results out of my camera.

Photography is a wonderful hobby to take on! I hope you enjoy it. I am a product photographer by trade, but I’ve been doing custom portrait illustrations after I lost my job due to COVID. I draw portraits of couples, families, and pets in my “free” time. It brings in a little extra money and keeps me busy and creative. I enjoy it very much. I look forward to seeing your photography on here. There are so many talented photogs here like Lonnie. His and many others’ images really make me happy!

Yeah, Lonnie. There are so many heartbreaking and scary images all over the news and social media right now. It’s hard to accept what all is going on currently. But seeing your sunny photos is such a good reminder of the beautiful and happy things in this world. ☀️

I'm trying to get my house organized and also get little things fixed and ready so that we can sell our house when this Pandemic settles down. We had been looking for houses and were hoping to move in March until everything changed.

The Magnolia shoot was disappointing, all the blooms were too high to get a shot of. I took some meh landscapes instead, and got a few macros of some roses. Also shot blind down an old abandoned well, kind of creepy.

Too bad the magnolia trees didn't bloom a little lower for you, Phil, but it sounds like you made the best of it.

I spotted a different tree yesterday, looked like there were some blooms closer to the ground, I'm going to take another attempt at getting the shot I want!

Hey Phil, waving at you! I am not working because of Health and the times are troubling. We don’t do any socially in person. I spend time outside with flowers, mostly I pull up the creeping Charlie from my lily of the valley flower bed. LOL. Also I am trying propagate a flowering almond shrub from a cutting. I researched it and followed the steps, but it seems way to easy. Thank you for your postings, I appreciate your pictures.

Hey Ginger! My wife acquired four big bags of potatoes, I have no idea what she had in mind when she took them, but ended up putting them in the dirt and covering them in hay. I'll be dang'ed if they hadn't already shot up through the straw, that's the best growing bunch of potatoes I have ever seen! She got the idea from a youtube video, "lazy man potatoes". Thank you for your posts, too!

I am amazed at how vegetables root and grow. My husband was preparing the garden for planting and he harvested a carrot. We haven’t planted carrots for years.
