This post almost didn't happen today bc the wife & I decide to play Hänsel & Gretel w/o our bread crumbs during our foraging in the state forest with temps to be near zero. We both had different ideas on how to get back and we were apparently both wrong. With light fading called 9-1-1 for rescue help as we were lucky to have reception. County Sheriff tracked us down from coordinates and other info we gave, Very humbled and embarassed by the whole deal. Thx to deputy who saved us a cold night in the forest. We head back out tomorrow to spot we were found to use GPS, topi maps, compass app to figure out how we went so wrong. We got to about 5-8 min from car but just got turned. I thinking my dyslexia wasn't helpful.

I'm sure you're already out and about, but you may have an option for your phone to ping your car's location as an app. Doesn't work if there's no signal though.

Thx Kat! And I'll look into it. I have several apps - altimeter, compass, terrain. Just failed under time pressure of fading light. Yesterday was not good enough and we need to learn from it

Thx for support blessed, Petra, Erq❣️ It was unsettling to say the least and a valuable lesson. Today we went back to the spot where we got lost and figure out what went wrong. #1:We should have trusted the compass instead of our instinct #2:I needed to take deeper breaths. #3: Meandering/shrooming is much different than hiking as it can be "directionsl-less". We need to look up every few minutes to reorientate. Today we used those techniques in a new spot withgood success.
