Great discussion between Greg Doucette and Dr. Mike Israetel on forms of cardio to do for maintaining muscle while losing fat.

Things to avoid. High impact exercises that use fast twitch muscle fibers.

1. Do elliptical, swimming, biking, walking, incline walking, etc.

2. Avoid stair steppers, running, jogging, sprinting, etc

Their reasoning is that when you do these exercises while also lifting weights, you push your body closer and closer to it's limits. You stress the fast twitch muscle fibers. The fast twitch muscle fibers are the ones that get the biggest. You want to avoid overstressing them. Walking on a treadmill, even at an incline, will use slow twitch muscle fibers.

I saw this first hand when I was running to get ready for my Tough Mudder event. I lost a lot of mass, it was gradual so I didn't notice until I saw picture comparisons. Excuse the clothing, lol, we decided on an 80s theme for the event. Just posting these to show that not only was I smaller, I wasn't even as lean either. I was 176 pounds with the same or more body fat as the pic on the left at ~198 pounds.

Anyway, I think everyone should remember that just because things aren't optimal, doesn't mean you have to stop doing them. If you want or love to do high impact cardio, go for it. I just had a huge bowl of Fruity Pebbles because it will help me sleep. Is it optimal to have a huge spike of carbs before bed? No, but it helps me get important sleep, so maybe it is, indirectly. You're welcome to all who thanked me for posting this. Night.

I think your legs look great in both but you definitely get smaller when you run a lot. I don't mind the rug. Now if the house was filthy in the background, I'd be flipping out and texting you. 😆

The posts emphasizing the difference between weight loss, fat loss and LBM loss are very helpful. Gave it almost no thought until a year ago and would never have picked up a weight heavier than 4lbs if I hadn't found Layne and co.

Also I think heavy lifting puts stress on your joints as well and by doing the exercises you listed in item 1 they are low impact and allow the joints to heal.

All of these years I just thought I cut too hard, had bad genetics for getting lean, or lacked the drugs necessary to be lean and "big" and it was just the cardio selection holding me back...

I also used to make fun of the elliptical. Like it was a lazy man's cardio tool. Now I'm eyeing it like what's up girl after watching this.

my favorite cardio machine ever was the nordictrack treadclimber, gym version. effectively two separate treadmills that had serious incline options but was as stress free on the joints as an elliptical. mechanical nightmare though, but man, you could burn some serious calories on that machine and work those glutes so they were on fire.

If you're doing something that burns you're working those fast twitch fibers. Totally fine if that's the only bun exercise you're getting but according to this info it will reduce the power output of your actual bun workouts. Similar to the stair climber they advise to avoid. Your legs and glutes are in fire depending on how many stairs you skip.

I don't see any rug/carpet, but I am a great, BIG, fan of JAWS! (*_*)
