I've been going through my old weight loss records to look for trends & to remind myself that I CAN lose weight!👍 Here's what I found out...

Actively started using the app in August of 2021 @ 175.6#
Sept. average wt= 167.1
Oct= 161.3
Nov= 153.0
Dec=145.4

2022
Jan=138.1
Feb=133.7
Mar=140.0 (got a new 'smart'(ass) scale)
Apr=136.1
May=133.2
June=130.9
July=129.0
Aug=126.3
Sept=124.6
Oct=124.1
Nov=126.0
Dec=127.3 (quit smoking on Dec. 1)

2023
Jan=130.0 (switched from Enbrel to Humira for PsA)
Feb=132.5
Mar=133.9
Apr=137.9
May=143.8
June=150.2 (switched back to Enbrel)

My original 'goal' weight was 150. Then I lowered it to 130 after I successfully lost that first 25#. Never really intended to get to the 120s but actually stayed there for 6 months!! My calorie budget was usually 1000/day (or less) till I reached maintenance where I upgraded to about 1200-1400/day. Then I quit smoking and changed biologics and basically took a 'break' from counting cals. WOWZA! That was NOT smart!

I was VERY strict with myself that whole first year and a half, with counting cals, watching macros and exercising at home nearly every day (mostly aerobic, with some strength)

Today's situation: heavier, less muscle strength (less working out), more stiffness/pain, less ROM. Back on Enbrel for about a month now. Still NOT SMOKING (though I yearn to smoke every single day). I'm pretty sure that if I started again, I would lose wt cuz I would go out for a smoke INSTEAD of eating something...but so far....N.O.P.E. (Not One Puff Even)😂

I know what worked to get my weight down last time, but I feel that the calories were just too low most of the time, and I really didn't begin to focus on protein until about a year into the journey. My plan is still CICO, but with more calories allowed. I see how many of you are being successful with weight training, and I wonder if I should look into spending time at the gym/pool that's about 20+ miles away.

Sorry this post is so long and detailed, but it's for my personal reflection and also to ask for ideas/advice. BTW, I've been cleared by cardiologist and my labs are looking good.

Crystal, our Gym is 17 miles away. We go 3 days a week & incorporate errands afterwards. There are members at our location that come in with walkers & wheelchairs. There is a wide age range from teenagers to seniors in all shapes, sizes & abilities. I highly recommend going to the Gym. Focusing on fitness as well as diet has helped me maintain at a weight range I'm happy with. I can also eat a bit more cause I'm burning more calories.

very nice!! Increasing calories, increasing exercise would help! lots of benefits to weight training/resistance bands. I recommend the app Hevy, it does give step by step for proper form with exercises, even body weight ones if you wanna try at home since distance is a thing for you... I understand, when I got sober in 2018 (all drugs/alcohol/ cigarettes) my weight CLIMBED quickly from 115-120 @5'2 to 160+ then we got pregnant Dec2018 and by Aug 2019 I weighed over 220lbs. I went to my son's Drs appt and knew I needed to take my health seriously when I stepped on the scale and saw 235lbs. My son had surgery in Sept 2019 at 15days old. By October 2019, is when i tried to change my lifestyle. Definitely got kickback from my husband, who was totally comfortable with pizza and soda 3x+ a weeks. The comfort eating was nice to assuage the fear of almost losing our baby... Cigarettes I believe lower our hunger in some way, haven't done research as to why. but that NEED to smoke has to get replaced with SOMETHING comforting in place of smoking, ya know? lots of people turn to snacks. Popcorn did help my mother in law out back then. Personally, I always turned to chocolate, and avoiding humanity.... eek.

Excellent detective work CJo👍 And this is why logging food, metrics, etc … is important. Without the data, you may not have spotted the culprit(s). Well done!!

*Sherrye, we go to Safeway which is right next door to the gym, so I really need to schedule shopping + gym a couple days a week, to start. I have NO IDEA where to start on the machines and can NOT afford a trainer. My lower body/core is quite weak right now, making walking difficult, so that may be my focus?

Crystal, my knees were bothering me when we first joined the Gym. I googled exercises to strengthen knees & incorporated them into my routine. You can do that with most " weaknesses", as I think you know. Most Gyms will do a complementary walk through & show you how to use the different machines. Tell them what you want to focus on & they should point you in the right direction. I also google the machines to determine what benefits each of them have.

Hi CrystalJo. Just my two cents on your gym visits. Since you say your core and walking are not up to par, that is absolutely where you should focus. Your core is your foundation for everything else you do physically and makes a tremendous difference in your well being. Lots and lots of online help available to do core strengthening. Good luck and keep us posted!

Crystal, I love that you are studying your FS data to figure out what worked and what didn’t. I do the same thing. So happy we have all this info, and for free. About your smart-a*s scale: I changed the batteries in mine last week and gained 2+ pounds in the process. I’m so p-o’ed I refuse to log it here! Planning to wait several more days before going near that nasty thing again. And about your gym, they should give you a free orientation to the machines once or twice a year as part of your membership. I also see how quickly you lost weight initially when you first started on FS. If you can do anything close to that again you’ll be back where you want to be by the end of the year. Onward!

RhumbaGirl~ hello! Data don't lie! and yes I truly appreciate that FS data is so helpful. LOL about your scale....ours must be related!!😂 As long as I stick with it and keep in touch here on FS, I think you're right about reaching my goal by the end of the year. 👍😎

The best words of advice I can give are to structure your program around what you can commit to in the long term. That may include working out at home and the gym. That may include not "weighing" your food but logging by guestimating size and portions. You should know by now what 4 oz of chicken looks like, a slice of toast is a slice of toast, an orange is an orange. Guestimating your portions is much more sustainable not only for life but when you are away from home. Good Luck!!!

So glad you posted this! I remember when we took Letty's class together! You were doing really good then. I think some kind of water fit classes would benefit you. It's less stressful on your joints. 🩷🩷

I'm so glad that you posted today Crystaljo74 miss you not being here, and I'm glad your blood work was good and your being diligent in not smoking that's awesome.

Great that you've resisted smoking again! You mentioned a focus on protein. That's been important for me along with water consumption and upping my fiber. Not a big exercise enthusiast although I admire those who enjoy it and are seeing benefits. I've maintained eleven pounds under my goal weight with consistently doing some exercise daily, really anything active. I look lean and toned. Maybe healthier food choices, portion control? You are what you eat? Anyway, it's obvious you have the motivation and you are already seeing results. Good to have you with us again :)
