I’m not sure why a lot of people think Mexican food is unhealthy. I order the Jalisco which is basically beef and chicken fajitas on top of a thin layer of rice with probably 2T of white queso mixed with the rice. It also comes with 6-10 small shrimp which I give to the kids.

5 years ago, when I was about 110-120lb, I would eat half of it. Last year I was eating all of it and now I’m back to eating about half again.

What’s not healthy is the small queso and chips I ate lol. Guessed around 580 calories which is probably more than the rest of dinner combined. BUT the queso is why I eat there. It’s my guilty pleasure to have this about once a month.

I’m having to guess and use chili’s nutrition to information as this local restaurant doesn’t have any info and when I asked I was told ‘a lot of calories, I wouldn’t want to even guess so just add in the highest calories you can find’. I’m eating one of the healthier meals and I rarely eat the tortillas because I don’t know if they are 80kcal or 200kcal each lol. But honestly I can’t see where it’s that bad for me and why it would be considered so high calorie if not for the cheese and chips. So here’s hoping chili’s information is close to what our local place is ;).

Also couldn’t saved 170kcal today if I hadn’t have had a second sandwich for lunch. I was starving and decided a second sandwich was better than adding dessert and probably an afternoon junky snack. Just happy that I’m down a pound this last week even though I had an extra days worth of calories basically lol. Maybe I’m speeding up my metabolism as I haven’t been very active this week with harvest, camp and 105 degree temps.

My mom cooks delicious 🤤 Mexican food, all splattered with lots of oil. Also beans n rice was an almost everyday meal, because it’s cheap. Carbs on top of carbs 🤤 easily I use to eat 2-3 cups of rice plus beans n cheese 😋🤤😋🤤 (now I eat 1/2 cup of rice 🍚🙃 ) Another issue was, my mom did not let me leave the table until I finish all on my plate, so I was trained to overeat 😋

I think most delicious Mexican food has lots of oil or even lard 🤤 N that’s where the issue comes 🙃

I dislike beans immensely lol. I eat about 1/2-1 cup of rice plain or with a small amount of queso if it’s already mixed in like with the Jalisco. The lard may be it. But the menu boasts ‘grilled’ so I’d think lard wasn’t used for the fajita part but perhaps for the rice. I make them at home and don’t use lard. Just lightly spray my cast iron skillet with Pam. Occasionally if the onions won’t get soft with just the juices from the peppers then I’ll add 1T of salted butter to the whole batch. 100kcal isn’t so bad when spread out among the whole meal 😋. I think a lot of it is food choices. Look for grilled options rather than fried. Avoid chips and dips is possible and limit rice and beans. I’m a huge fan of chimichangas so giving those up has been hard. My 3yo daughter calls this restaurant ‘himichanga’ as that’s what she always wants. I would just order a taco or taco salad but I can make those at home. It’s the queso and rice that I can’t make so I eat those when eating out. I’m glad I can’t make them on my own or I’d never lose weight lol.

Drooling over here! Not really, but I have missed beans and rice a lot! I still have them from time to time, but not how I used to. I also miss fideo! But you are right, you can still enjoy Mexican food whether at home or at a restaurant, if you make the right food choices. We are presently visiting family and friends in Los Angeles and the other morning had breakfast at a Mexican restaurant that serves a Choncha Breakfast Sandwich. It consists of a split grilled concha (pan dulce) with jalapeño bacon and scrambled eggs. We ordered one as part of our shared breakfast. It was delicious, but I only had about 1/6 of it, just to taste. Moderation is key. Good to hear you're enjoying your food and still taking care of yourself. 😊 👍

@rosio very true! I myself had 2-3 coca colas every day @140cal each. I refused for years to give it up and one day several weeks ago I decided I’d try a Coke Zero cherry while at a gas station. Now I’m hooked on it. It’s still soda yet 0cal. Years of people telling me coke was bad for me didn’t help. Me having a moment at just the right time that I wanted to save those 280 cal a bottle of Coke was for a snack after dinner. It was meant to be as that’s the first time I ever considered cutting out a Coke! Everyone has to come to the conclusion on their own that they should eat/drink a little healthier. My blood glucose has been 95-105 for awhile now. Drs aren’t worried about it but with diabetes in my family I decided it would be good to keep away from Coke for awhile. Hoping Coke Zero helps that go down a bit. If not I’ll cut back more and go to tea more often :).

@Becca Thanks :). so glad ours isn’t open for breakfast! I do my best to never eat breakfast out. Occasionally the kids and I will want a treat but that’s like twice a year. Fajitas are usually a good healthy option :). Well they are if grilled or cooked on that little flat cast iron pan.
