Protein hints:

Lean pork such as pork chops will gain you more protein per ounce than ground beef, steaks or chicken. Ground beef 85/15 is about the same as skinless chicken breast.

As far as cost, chicken is the cheapest. Beef and pork depends on current market value but I believe pork is cheaper right now. Here ground beef is about 6 cents per gram of protein while skinless chicken breast is less than 3 cents per gram of protein.

When you start looking for protein bars and shakes look at price, calories and total grams. Do the math 😉. I’ve found that protein options like these are more expensive yet I get more protein for the calories on the brands I purchase. My bars and shakes currently run me around 10-12 cents per gram of protein. The shakes avg 5-6 kcal per gram of protein I get for them and my bars are 10-11kcal per gram of protein. This is just kcal divided by grams of protein. (Protein and carbs are 4kcal per gram and fat is 9kcal per gram) This means my choices are lower in carbs and fats than other brands and meat and nuts. My jerky is about $1.10 for 50kcal and 10g protein. I’ll let you practice the math for that one 😉.

Peep, not having any children to support makes it easier to spend a bit more on our groceries. I know it's a balancing act when you have an entire family to consider. You're doing an awesome job taking care of yourself and your family. 😊

I know we have the funds but we are also trying to build up hubbys 401k and get ahead on some bills. We like to pay as much as we can in order to have them paid off early 😉. Being a stay at home mom makes me feel a little guilty about gym memberships and protein snacks. The family gets to use the membership too though. Hubby handles ALL of the finances, his choice, so I’m usually a bit wary of spending too much. Like my recent purchase though, it saves us money when I buy in bulk. I hate waste of any kind. If we were millionaires I would still try to save money lol. And I love numbers so it’s no chore to figure out the best prices. It will be cheaper when the kids are grown. Just thinking about that gives me horrible anxiety so I’ll not worry about it lol. I don’t get my hair or nails done. I only get a trim every couple of months and a massage monthly now. I don’t have a new car or new name brand clothes. So all in all I save hubby money on that stuff lol. One of the reasons I want to lose more is so that I don’t have to buy new clothes. I like my clothes! And most of it has been discontinued so I can’t replace it with the same thing or similar.

I completely get it! I was the same when kids were growing up. When they were in jr. and senior high school it seemed like the $ flew out the windows! Keep up the good work.😊

Thanks Becca! All three are in basketball. The middle is in the gifted program, ambassadors for her school, choir and 4H. The oldest quit everything except archery and started volleyball and track on top of basketball. Hubby coaches two PreK basketball teams. He does the coaching for practice and games and I help and keep up with everything lol. Kids help now too! We now pay the kids $50 allowance monthly. They buy all their own stuff for their activities. We pay for meals when we are there but even snacks are up to them as well as fees. Easier on us and they learn to budget better. The oldest needs that! Now she wants all Nike, North Face and Underarmour. She’s aiming for it for Christmas now as I keep telling her to save her money. Not my fault she wasted $120 and now can’t buy that $100 jacket or $80 shoes ;). She hates me now but I’m determined to raise kids who don’t expect everything handed to them. It’s working with the middle and the youngest is 4 so time will tell with her.

Lol Jen! You wouldn’t say that if you saw my house right now! I love organizing and love getting a good deal so all this is easy. Not so easy keeping a house organized with three mini tornadoes, two cats and a hubby who can’t manage to undress in the laundry room but rather piece by piece as he walks from the living room to the bedroom lol. 🙄

SAHM’s deserve an allowance. You work too. Very very hard. I admire your fiscal responsibility and your knowledge!

Aww thanks Kay! I admire you as well! Hubby started giving me a Christmas allowance recently. I’d like to purchase presents for him and not have him see it on the credit card statement 😉. My counselor says I need to start spending money on myself so I set up a monthly massage. Not worth the price but it feels soooo good lol. And hubby usually doesn’t care about all my protein stuff and junk food. It’s all in my head I guess. Comes from growing up poor I think. And now I enjoy saving where I can. It’s almost like a challenge for me weekly to try and find good deals 😁.
