** WHAT IS WATER RETENTION? **

Grab your belly rolls. Most adipose fat around the abdomen tends to be hard and dense. Bloat from water stored there will have a more jiggly feel and will bounce/ripple when tapped.

Your body has a set amount of water it needs to function. This amount is always changing though.

You can't just say, "I urinated a lot today and it was clear, so I'm getting enough water."

In addition to urine, breathing, sweating, digestion all use water. The more you eat, the more water you'll need. The harder you exercise... you guessed it!

When you have the flu, diarrhea, vomit, excess phlegm and mucous (aka your runny nose) all use lots of water - which is why drinking more when sick is important.

So, retention: similarly to calories, when we lack water in our diet, the body will store it for later use. If there is enough coming in, it has no reason to hang onto it.

Sodium and potassium bind to cells which increases the water capacity they can hold. They are both easily flushed by drinking more water.

Carbohydrates also tend to bond with water molecules and will flush as well. Too little water mixed with either carbs or sodium/potassium and you get the bloated look.

The "woosh" is all about getting plenty of water into your system and the cells release their excess holdings of water (they don't need hostages anymore since the body got what it wanted 😉).

If you have issues (barring medical problems) with retaining water, add lots more water than you normally consume and you should see a difference in scale weight as it drops soon after*.

*This won't continue forever - just until you reach your body's natural hydrated resting point.

Also, if you begin to limit your water intake again, you'll probably start storing up, so be consistent!

Heh - I only say that because it's an area where I fall short on a fairly consistent basis. I do good for a while, then ... not so much. :)

Oh I understand completely. I used to drive very little water before. Thought all that drinking water stuff was hog-wash. It was taken me a year to get where I am drinking enough and it hasn't been that long that I have been reaching those numbers. It's just not a habit yet, but I am trying. 😊

Great, I am sitting in front of the TV tapping my belly while my husband is looking at me like I'm crazy. Of course, he already knows that I am!! Great tip!

Becc@, love it. I'm not sure that is a team sport, Chris. You wouldn't be telling a fib?
