Debbie Cousins's Journal, 13 Feb 21

Power was just out for an hour and a half! I had just about finished making dinner when it croaked. Ice storm, and power lines going down. Thankfully, it just came back on, so I better write while I can. We lose power a lot around here when there's ice! I was really concerned about what I would eat with no way to prepare foods! We don't have any sandwich fixin's, and I can't eat bread anyway. I have some eggs boiled, but the "fully-cooked" bacon really isn't good unless you crisp it up. I have some Slim Jim's for the grandkids (I've never eaten one), but I guess I could have eaten one of those, and I have some cheeses. Speaking of which, I forgot that I bought those little mozzarella "pearls!" I'll have to put that in my Food Diary for tomorrow so I remember to have one of the little 3-packs. We would have survived the night because we rounded up 9 jar candles and we had a whole box of hand-warmers. They really helped during that hour and a half with no heat. The house was only heating to 61 degrees anyway because it's about 25 outside. A big branch fell on our car, but thankfully, only the little branches at the end actually HIT the car. Both our phone batteries were under 70% so we've got those charging now. We DO have a car charger, but since there was ice, we don't know if we would even have been able to get the door open to use it. That's my excitement for the night. If you don't hear from me for awhile it will be because the power went back out and we have no internet. Fingers crossed, and praying.

Good heavens!!!! We've been without electricity in the worst heat and the worst cold and the cold is by far THE WORST!!!! Get that food done and eat. Get things together so you can huddle up if needed. Will be thinking of you 💗

Good luck! We are supposed to get -32 tomorrow and you just reminded me as to how lucky I am to have a fireplace. Good backup although you got me thinking I should get my camping meals downloaded and a jar of my "9-day" candles out... "Stay toasty, my friend"!

Oh no. Glad you got it back. Hope you can stay warm. I think it is good to have some canned tuna or other protein that could like from a can for times like that. I usually also have nuts, cheeses, protein powders and protein bars around. Maybe I have a food hoarder issue LOL

Our power has been out since 10:30am and is still out. We've had to eat sandwiches and cereal today, anything that didn't need to be hit. I can't believe we still don't have power and we're freezing, no hot water. Everything is electrical.😭😭😭

Ice is not our friend. We have been without power for up to a week after an ice storm. We do have a small generator. We also have a very efficient fireplace insert that keeps the main areas of the house warm enough to function. We've used our barbecue grill with a side burner to cook & heat water. Any chance of bad weather we make sure we have food that can be prepared easily. Hope your power stays on.

Thats my fear too! I'm getting ready to make dinner and they've announced a state of emergency in my county due to power outtages from ice. So far we are good though. I just hope it doesn't go out while I'm cooking!!! Nice that you had hand warmers!!! Stay warm and safe Debbie!

The storm is supposed to hit us here in the Deep South Monday, 16° forecast, hasn't been that cold in Houston in over 30 years. Needless to say, I'm hunkering down, hope all my Northern FS friends stay safe and warm.

If you have a grill you can cook anything! A nice little “campfire” is also a great choice for cooking.

Just make sure ---You grill out doors! Porches? I hope you get to keep electricity back on. It is so easy to forget how vulnerable we can become when our utilities kick out. I hope you stay at least at 61 degrees. I have hit 59 degrees...anything less is miserable. Prayers to you. Hang in there.

Sometimes when it is that cold out it can be almost impossible to get a fire started.. always a good idea to have emergency foods, light sources and “warmth” covered. I live in earthquake country and we have to be prepared to manage our own needs for 3 weeks. That is a long time. Canned tuna, peanut butter and other similar canned items store really well. Just put a date on everything so you can rotate stock.

So it's now 59 degrees in the house and a day later and the power still isn't on. The good thing is the gym is open so I'm going and I can get a shower there after I work out.

North Texas— we have snow, 29 degrees here. 0 degrees expected this week. We have been warned about rolling blackouts but none so far.We heat with wood and propane so keep warm. Water is turned off and pipes drained to avoid - we hope- broken pipes. Hubby still not allowed to do much with new pacemaker, so nephew next door is helping out with cattle chores and firewood. Such a good man! Stay safe everyone, this too will pass. Happy Valentines!

1 drain froze in our "feels like -21" (actual -6). Heating the wall up and hope I can get my laundry done today. Now I know which drain needs more insulation this spring!
