"This new study by Templeman et al. doesn't look good for people that like long intermittent fasts.

The researchers compared weight loss diets with 25% constant daily energy restriction vs. complete alternate day fasting with 0% energy intake during the 24-hour fasts and 150% energy intake in between. The study was in healthy adults.

So same weekly energy intake and macros but either with long fasting or without.

The fasting group lost less body fat, probably because they experienced a significant reduction in energy expenditure from physical activity, especially later on into the fasts.

Several other studies have pointed to reductions in physical activity level during fasting, which is why I don't recommend intermittent fasting (IF) during periods of high physical activity, and not fasting too long in general.

The fasting group also lost considerably more lean body mass, although this was not significantly different from the other group.

Moreover, the fasting did not result in significant cardiometabolic health improvements, including insulin sensitivity and blood blood sugar levels after eating.

And the kicker: the fasting did not result in favorable changes in gene expression of inflammation and autophagy.

My recommendations:
- Don't fast during prolonged periods of high physical activity.
- Don't fast more than ~20 hours, preferably no more than ~16.
- If you want to implement short, aggressive deficits in your diet, do protein sparing modified fast (PSMF) periods: maintain a high protein intake during the 'fast' to keep your metabolism up and prevent muscle loss."- Menno Henselmans

Interesting. And good news for me who cannot go long without eating. Protein sparing sounds worse than just not eating, imo.

Yes, it sucks but I have to do a little of it some days, I never even get close to 16 hours anymore. I found it funny how there was no advantage in autophagy, the thing that people who push fasting are always claiming is a big bonus of fasting.

Yes right! It’s a trend! We are always trying anything that will help us on an easier path - myself included. 😂. I’m interested in the OMAD phenomenon too. But only because I’m never going to do that. Ever. I lift fasted in the morning.. from dinner the night before. But I definitely eat after. I just need to eat a little less.

There are aspects of IF that I like. I love the idea of OMAD but I find it very difficult. The most I can do is go from about 8 p.m to 1 p.m without eating, just having coffee in the morning and even that is rare. I do wish I could go a bit longer because it does help with a deficit when I can do it.

DP I eat two big meals a day mainly. I prefer a bigger portion. Plus I hate cooking & cleaning 😂 so I like to limit that too. Sometimes I have lunch but I try to avoid. But hard when husbands home when I’m feeding him. Mind you I’m not married to a bodybuilder but my hub is reasonably fit. How do you split your meals daily? I’m heavier than you but I think we are same height (5’11”) maybe frame hard to tell

Fasting zealotry is the worse. Most of the positive health outcomes it claims can be achieved through weight loss (the cardiometabolic ones), other forms of calorie restriction or exercise.

The people who are obsessed with fasting for autophagy usually don't understand autophagy.

Dp, yeah, it can sure help to not break the eating "seal" so to speak. I guess it would depend on what I eat but delaying breakfast can help with total calories in. But maybe in the end it evens itself out if less food also makes us less energetic and is worse for muscle protein synthesis? Idk.

Yes Mermee, it makes a lot of sense. Meal timing is relevant. I notice it immediately when I eat how my energy levels increase. I sit on a recumbent bike at work, as soon as I am finished with an orange or cake I automatically begin pedaling faster lol. You can see it with pets and children as well. Give them food and they have even more energy than normal. Our old dog even runs around an throws his toys up in the air right after a meal like he's a puppy again.

Paula, if you can sift through all my weigh ins, I have posted many, many interesting articles. Of course, I will keep doing it. :D

Piggy Winkle- It varies daily based on if I am hungry. LOL. Like right now- I have slept for crap the last two nights. Planned to just have coffee but instead made it a whole meal with hopes it holds me for quite awhile. I have no set plan ever- because I know the more rules I try to have- the more I will break them. ;) I just wing it and try to stay in a deficit.

Piggy winkles, I hate not eating too! What a coincidence. :P

You're welcome, Shiloh! LC, I can't stand zealots either. There are so many experts who share scientific evidence-based info and people choose to latch onto certain individuals books or Youtube videos instead. I guess we all start somewhere, it's just sad when there is no reasoning with some.

DP. Can totally relate to that!! Totally.
