** UNDERSTANDING FAT CELLS **

If you consume more calories than you utilize, the body tends to hold onto the excess by storing some or all of the surplus in the fat cells.

The fat cells are basically expanding batteries that store biological energy for when there is a lack.

They also retain water for when you are under hydrated.

The body is great at creating more fat cells. Once it runs out of storage space, it makes new ones so that it never runs out of water or fuel.

When you go into a caloric deficit/restriction and the body needs more fuel than you're supplying it, it drains the fat cells to make up the difference.

Think of the fat cells as little balloons; they fill when they have stuff to fill them with and expand leaving the body larger when enough are full. The skin stretches to accommodate the size change (think of thousands of tiny sticky balloons filled with olive oil and water).

Leaving them expanded for too long will get the skin used to the abundant size and, therefore, take a long time (if ever) to return its intended shape and elasticity once the size of the fat cell community shrinks.

However, the body has no way to remove unused fat cells.

You can deflate them by increasing your output and decreasing your input (diet and exercise), but their numbers will remain the same.

If you retain full fat cells for a long time and then empty them to get in shape, the problem now, is you have a bunch of deflated balloons and skin that won't retract. As small as these deflated fat cells may be, they still take up space.

Remember: fat cells are hungry.

If you have less fat cells and eat reasonably, they don't need to multiply and can be content swelling and deflating with their same numbers.

The more you have, the easier it is to "get fat" again after losing weight because they're still there... waiting for you to fall off the wagon so they can fill up again.

Liposuction can remove excess fat. You can have surgery to tighten up loose skin. Stay hydrated, eat within your caloric expenditure, limit overeating, and you can control the number of cells and their size.

YOU are in control! The body responds to what you do it! The choice is yours.

omg, what a photo. great writing. and yes, this is one of theories about why some fatten a lot but don't develop metabolic dysfunction, whereas others may only fatten a bit and be severely metabolically ill. It's about the potential to create new fat cells. at least, that's the theory.

Becky, is Chris your brother?!

That explains why I feel I get everything back so quickly, and have to get back on track ASAP to reduce it in double the time lol Much informative!

Great info! Thank goodness I'm all about plastic surgery cuz once I get to my ideal weight, I'm getting those fat cells sucked out! 🤣🤣

LC, no not blood related. A few years back we were kidding around and one of us, (probably Chris) said something about telling mom that the other was misbehaving and it just took off from there. Back in 2019 we went up to Washington to visit one of our daughters and we were able to spend the day with Chris and his wife. We also met up with Melissa. That's how I started calling him Hermanito. 😊

Thank you, Chris! 100 percent true in my case. Happier and healthier than ever at 62, but I weighed 300-350 for 20 years of my adult life, and those fat cells are not retracting at this point. Still, I am feeling great and fitting into clothes sizes that I never thought I'd see again. Thanks to FS and my online pals.

Look into cool sculpt before surgery. Less invasive. My doctor friends tell me that’s what they’d do. It’s not for huge amounts though. I watch too much Botched to do surgery.

What a tale! Did Chris try to get you into lifting?

LaughingChevre, And that is why Becky is my sister... But I don't claim her brother even if he is smart about fat cells and lifting! 😁

He is useful for learning about plants... Especially grafting things. He also likes my cats... Or I should say one of my cats loves him anyway! 😁

No, LC, he didn't. 🤔 Melissa, that's funny! 😅

Hey, KS. Checked out cool sculpting. They said I was not a candidate as I'm mostly loose skin and not fat cells they can zap. Good luck to all who can employ that.

By November or so, it's time to recharge my batteries to about 600%.

It’s a very SoCal thing to talk about. I haven’t done it, but I know people who have. I’m still in my pizza phase.

Yeah. As a person who has struggled with significant weight gain/loss cycle my whole life, I have known about this since probably I was a teenager. It is no less discouraging to see it here today. Oh, well. My goal is health and stability; I gave up hope of "svelteness" a very long time ago. And yes: Poor kitty!!!

My apologies, guys! I'm sorry to have mislead you all... I meant CAT CELLS! None of this information applies to humans. Carry on.
