TDX00's Journal, 27 Sep 21

Gosh darn it, I'm truly humbled by all the love I received on my last journal entry. You guys! <3

At the start of this diet, and in an attempt to convince myself that "I MEAN IT THIS TIME!!", I wrote down a list of 50 good reasons to lose weight. I printed that list out in a classy font, framed it, and hung it in my bathroom where I was sure to stare at it multiple times a day (depending on how much water I drank). Number 29 on that list is simply, "You'll fit".

This past weekend, I took my family to an indoor play centre for my cousins' kid's 3rd birthday party. There were crazy slides, tunnels, towers to climb, and even awesome little electric go carts. My wife's key responsibilities at the party were socialising and keeping our 1-month-old daughter alive, so it fell to me to make sure my 2.5yo son had a great time (and also stayed alive). I appreciate that the play centre is designed for small humans both 1/10th my age and weight, though never before had the benefits of Number 29 on my list become so apparent. The other Dads fit through those tunnels; their backsides fit on those slides - mine did not. It was the first time that I really felt like my weight was forcing me to let my son down. It sucked!

And what do I do when things suck? I eat! But herein lies a small victory. My cousin had ordered a massive party platter of deep-fried junk for the table - my favourite! I'm proud to say that I ate only three potato wedges (my favourite) and one curry puff (also my favourite) - and that's it! It broke my heart to watch the waitress throw 20,000 calories worth of potato gems and chicken nuggets (also favourites) in the bin at the end of the party, but God damn was I proud of myself for not shovelling all that food into my face like it was my last meal!

Small victories like this are going to get me through this diet, and also, one day, that tunnel...

just remember that a "diet" isn't just something you can use to lose some weight then go back to eating crap all the time, it's really a lifestyle change. it also doesn't mean you can't eat bad things ever because it's just not true. it comes down to putting out (exercise) what you take in (food) and moderation. good luck

It sucks to not fit or to not be able to eat what you like, but not being able to fit is worse. I've done the embarrassing walk away from theme park rides because the harness would not fasten then watched while my kids had fun without me.

food control is good to lose some excess but fitness and strength is also important. I found to shred and be strong physically there is nothing better than a good Muay Thai gym for me. open up the gyms already you dopey politicians.

I find weight training is very relaxing. Focussing on each exercise takes my mind off anything else. All good wishes to you with your “project self”. None of us need to beat ourselves up for eating junk. There are many reputable studies coming out now showing it IS addictive. As to emotional eating, for me that was ingrained in childhood when adults distracted me with food if I was upset. Being aware of these patterns is a success in itself, as you have shown.🤩
