Debbie Cousins's Journal, 09 Oct 23

Well, I’ve overdone it! I’m listening to my body, and it’s really cussing me out! Three consecutive days of walking 6 miles a day, plus doing my PT exercises, have taken its toll. Having a really hard time sleeping because of the knee pain. Actually resorted to taking an Oxycodone just now for the #7-#8 pain, and I applied Voltaren 2.32% topically.

I have PT today, and my therapist will hopefully give me lots of ultrasound heat, massage, TENS (transcutaneous electric nerve stimulation) and ice with compression. All of those things hurt when theyre being administered, but they ultimately help. She might even wrap the knee.

As this is my last (or next to last) visit to the out-patient therapist, I need to find out more I can do at home when I’ve over reached. I DID ice after every mile of walking yesterday. Maybe while im trying to build up my stamina I should be elevating the knee, too. AH, maybe it was all the standing to cook the casserole that put me over the edge! Oxy is easing up the pain some now, so I’ll try to go back to sleep.

What does the physical therapist say? As a nurse I would think it would be better to gradually increase activity instead of pushing yourself to the point of tremendous pain. I was always taught that mild discomfort might be expected. Why do you feel the need to push yourself so hard?

Morticia, I feel the need to push myself so hard because I am, unfortunately, an all or nothing kind of a person. As long as I'm doing perfectly, I can keep up with it! But, if I stumble, I'm down for quite awhile. The Physical Therapist thinks I should slow down some. I'm very motivated to continue with the walking. When I need to take it easy, I will go easier or forego the PT exercises. She said that doing the stretching ones will help, even when I am in pain, but that I shouldn't try to do the strengthening ones if I'm hurting. I think last night's pain was a fluke - probably because of a big change in the weather.

O Debbie im so sorry. I was hoping you would feel amazing by now. Keep working on getting the weight down that may relieve some of that pain? I know that my pt for my hip stressed over and over to do stretches daily. I started back with the trainer today after the 10 week hiatus (from surgeon) and first thing she said was she wants me stretching. Easy stuff. Make sure you keep that water intake up. Looks like you’ve been doing really well.🥰. Again, prayers for you to heal fully.
