Debbie Cousins's Journal, 27 Mar 21

Forgot to weigh when I first got up. Didn't remember until I had already drunk an 8-oz water (1/2 pound) and a 2-egg cheese omelet with 1/2 avocado on it, along with two slices of bacon. Actual weight was 228.5 when I took it, but I subtracted a pound for the food and water.

Yesterday, my back was hurting - it has been every day lately, especially when I do any standing (cooking, washing dishes, etc). My husband gave me two of his pain pills, and I had an adverse reaction to them. I was so dizzy I couldn't walk a straight line, and I was as weak as can be! Lasted all through the afternoon and through the evening.

I went to bed at 6pm and got up at 6am, after the night BEFORE, when my grandson had spent the night and we only got FOUR hours of sleep, then a nap for 1-1/2 hours. I'm used to at least TEN hours of sleep, so I was REALLY tired!

I've found that when I was feeling lousy, my first thought was, "Some Diet Coke will make me feel better." I recognized that was Satan's lie and resisted him with my new WOE mantra: I Corinthians 6:12 - "All things are permissible for me, but not all things are helpful. All things are permissible to me, but I will not be enslaved by anything." (The Message version of the Bible). The craving quickly subsided and I was able to resist. I also realize that there some foods, which when I eat them, I feel like they're "supposed to be" eaten with Diet Coke. These include nuts, particularly salted ones, and (though I haven't had any yet) hamburgers, pizza, and the like.

My daily calorie intake has been lower than I would actually LIKE it to be. I want my "set point" to get back up to about 1,800-2,000 calories so that when I eat less, which I very often WILL BE, I will lose weight. I want to keep my body guessing, which will make my metabolism more cooperative.

P.S., I'm cool with having gained a pound this morning, because having read so many books, I knew that it would happen, so I'm not freaked out about it. Also, I'm confident knowing that I will be fasting 24-hours 2x/week, which will help me continue to lose.

Some fruit-flavored sparkling water might be a good replacement or placebo for Diet Coke 🙂

...I am really trying to get the 'mental energy' to do a solid 2 day 'water fast' next week (this week was a 'bust' because I was only able to do 1 day and then hit the carbs in the middle of the week). I am using you and @Jimmiepop for inspiration. On a Spiritual level my 'work' is to first Surrender, then Acceptance, then Gratitude that I have the Blessing to have the Opportunity to fast in the first place. Motivation and Willingness is the thing that actually makes me do it... anyway, Good luck on your journey!

I was reading a thing once that suggested Americans in particular have been "trained" to drink sugary drinks with salty items. They get paired so often at fast food places that eventually our brains come to expect that combination, so that when we eat salty foods we then crave the sweet to go with it. It's an interesting thought, anyway. =)

@Bernard.Sg, I think I'm going to try to go with just water. I'm afraid that any kind of carbonation will just get me wanting DC again. @she_loves, my husband is just the opposite. After he has something sweet, he says, "Now I need something salty." @adefwebserver, I'm honored to be one of your inspirations for fasting. Yes, it is a blessing to be ABLE to fast, and to not HAVE to, as some people have to do in third countries (and possibly in some places here in America). May God be with you and help you to accomplish your goal of going two days.

Congrats on being able to resist the Diet Coke “niggle”. So hard as it’s addictive. Great job!

I love this post. I’ve been on fat secret for a few years but mostly just use it to keep up with fats , carbs, and protein intake. Started IF a couple months ago with my oldest daughter. I’m going to try and do a 30 to 22 hour fast Monday not so much to loose weight but to prove to myself I can and for all the health benefits that come with Your an inspiration 😊. Thanks for sharing

@Javadali, I've now completed 14 days without Diet Coke. I'm praying I will able to get to 365 days! @Chaffinconnie@65, not sure what a "30 to 22 hour fast" is, but I pray you accomplish your goal, no matter HOW many hours it is that you want to achieve. You've got this!

I think getting rid of the soda has been your greatest accomplishment - water is my favorite for years now - so much better for us!

@Shirfleur and @HCB, yes I've known forever that Diet Coke isn't good for me OR for my grandkids, who always want a sip of my drink, but I was completely ensnared by it. I thank God for deliverance. I pray it is a permanent and I can be able to honestly say, "I'm a FORMER Coke-aholic."

Good going Debbie! You are doing great. It can be a tough road but stick with it.Proverbs 16:3 “Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.” Blessings.

The 30 was a typo lol I meant to say 20 to 22 hour fast. I

This is so wonderful Debbie. Wow, I'm proud of you that you resisted Diet Coke. Yes, we are so indoctrinated to want sodas with anything and everything. If you want a treat of a hamburger or pizza eventually it sure does NOT need to be with any particular drink. You are doing so great! I agree with HCB that getting rid of Diet Coke has been your greatest accomplishment! Way to go.

Yes, @HCB and, "In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will direct your paths." Thank you, @Javadali, and @Snowwhite100, now 15 days, PTL - half of a month. I think the longest I've ever gone in my LIFE has been ALMOST a month. Don't think I've ever made it that for. I've realized that DC is a real ADDICTION, and that, like an alcoholic, I won't be able to have even ONE can. Total abstinence is my plan, with God's help, of course!

Aww, thank you @acomandr, but I can't take the credit, "For it is God who works in me both to WILL and to DO of His good pleasure."

Debbie, I feel that besides the well-known benefits like fats-loss, autophagy and inflammation reduction etc, Fasting helped me overcome nicotine and sugar addictions. I had a gathering with friends yesterday and I didn't feel the least tempted when they offered me cigarettes and sugary treats which i used to enjoy heartily for decades. I'm confident that with your regular fasting, you'll lose interest in Diet Coke very soon!
