Debbie Cousins's Journal, 27 Jun 21

Day #57 - yesterday was officially 8 weeks (7x8-56). Weighed 199.0 this morning. Makes me breathe a little easier in case I have to resubmit my weigh-out video for HealthyWage. Still fasting until I get the official word that it has been approved.

Not experiencing the weakness I was feeling last week. Feel pretty much completely "normal" again.

There are some stipulations for what you should eat when you are breaking an extended fast (and what NOT to eat) to gently ease your digestive system back into working. I'm wondering if those things will really apply to me since my digestive system was just VERY active last Wednesday when I had my colonoscopy. I guess it's better to be safe than uncomfortably sorry. I'll probably start out with having one of these things at a time: avocado toast, a banana, salmon, and cooked kale. Those are all highly recommended in the 14-Things-To-Break-A-Fast article I read.

Might have to just take a couple of bites of the Italian food at the memorial dinner on Tuesday, and bring the rest home to have after my stomach is more eased into eating.

Going to try to limit eating out to once a week, though we have lots of things to celebrate that got put on the back burner - Father's Day, my Birthday, and we received a couple of gift certificates for nice restaurants for those occasions (Cracker Barrel, Roberto's Italian, Applebee's) We should be able to go out once a week for quite awhile before having to actually even have to PAY for dinner!

This will be my chance to get a fresh start with portion control - using a small salad plate instead of a big dinner plate. I still have a long way to go in my "walk" before I get to the place where I can say I am exercising the Fruit of the Spirit of Self-Control. May the Lord do His work in that area.

Hope everyone has a blessed Sunday. If you've been waiting to actually GO back to church, today would be a great day to start!

Glad you're doing some research on breaking the fast. Best of luck with this next phase in your journey.

I would think that you will have to be especially careful about what you break your fast with *because* of your colonoscopy. =) The prep fluid clears out your intestines so quickly by pulling fluid from the rest of your body into your GI tract. It's not an ideal environment for your gut cells or for the good bacteria that live there normally. That on top of two months of fasting means that both your gut cells and your bacteria are working under high stress conditions. Your gut cells are a little bit unique in that while every other organ system in your body relies on nutrients delivered via blood, your gut cells will use nutrients directly out of your GI tract - and if there isn't much in there, they shift their function away from digestive-related things and towards basic cell survival. Also, your good bacteria population is going to be quite depleted. As you begin to introduce food back in to your system, your gut cells will move back towards a digestive state, and your good bacteria population will grow again. Too much food, too rich food, or food consumed too quickly overwhelms both of those systems. Debbie if I were you, I'd read up a bit on re-feeding syndrome, as your extended fast puts you in one of the risk categories (here's a nice overview: https://www.healthline.com/health/refeeding-syndrome#risk-factors). Be careful, and good luck! =)

You are doing great! Yesterday I did see on my computer a form on Healthy Wage where they asked for comments on how you lost the weight plus asking to scan your Driver's License. I called them and left a message that I didn't know how to do that but I sure would give them the number. Tomorrow I will try to speak with them. If necessary I may have to go back and bother my neighbor to scan it for me. I sure feel like the dinosaur that I am, not keeping up with today's technology. At 79 I've allowed it to pass me by. I see the picture in my head of the proverbial donkey with its front legs dug into the ground being pulled forward. That's me with tech.

Oh She_loves, you are so terrific!💪👍👏👏👏👏 I had something go wrong with my thyroid in which I didn’t want to eat for a month, wasn’t hungry and all foods tasted awful. When they fixed my problem eating again was where the true nightmare started.😳 My system couldn’t digest and it was just hellish! I had to take days off of work for I needed to be by the throne. It took about a month or more to get my track back on course. NEVER let that ever happen to you Debbie, NIGHTMARE!!! Thanks again She_loves!👏👏👏

I've heard it easier to break fast with broth. Then had a small low fat meal a few hours later. Thomas DeLauer has a lot of info on fasting and breaking fasts.

snow white, why do they need your driver license info? That is like giving them your social security number. dr lic has all your info on it. Read AARP articles on scams.

@Shrewedness I'm so sorry that happened to you! I think we take the GI tract's everyday function for granted, but the intestines themselves really rely on the food we eat to stay healthy. Fasting for sure has its benefits, but it isn't that great for the intestines, and we really do have to be careful about how we start reintroducing food. Thanks for sharing your experience, Shrewed - so sorry for what you paid to earn that experience! 😬❤️

@agnesvitt, before I signed up for HealthyWage, I checked them out on Snopes (which lists most every scam that is going on out there) and on the Better Business Bureau sight, where they had either a 4 or 5-star rating (can't remember since it was six months ago).

You are quite the smart cookie, researching before reintroducing foods!!! I have total faith you will figure it out and do it properly for you!

I can't believe I typed "sight" when it should have been SITE! I LOVE homophones, and very rarely make a mistake when it comes to them. "Aye think eye was just knot thinking! Their arrgh very few thymes when eye don't get them write."
