Debbie Cousins's Journal, 09 Feb 22

Praying about whether to pay another $1,000 to replace the head gasket in our 2005 Chevy Equinox or to try to somehow get another car. God knows our need, and will supply for it, no matter what is needed.

Ordered my husband a "new" iPhone 7 yesterday from Amazon for only $139. The one he has is a 6 and is not compatible with the Premise jobs I do each morning. Since he has been taking me every morning, with the car in the shop, we've decided that he will start doing the jobs too - twice the money, which we can really use right now!

Got the rest of my Christmas decorations taken down yesterday, because my daughter wants to come and bring us lunch on Sunday for my husband's birthday. Right now, the bare tree is still in the dining room and the dining room table is in the entryway. All we have to do is put the tree on the truck to take to the dump and then I can prepare for the Sunday meal. She's going to make pork roast, mashed potatoes, gravy and Bananas Foster Crème Brule, and all I have to make is sauerkraut, green beans and sweet tea.

My husband's aunt is taking us out for lunch on Friday for hubby's birthday.

I finished off the remainder of the chicken 'n dumplins for breakfast this morning. Now, we can begin to whittle down the 12-quarts of chili we made yesterday.

Nothing much else happening around here. Just plugging along.

If I may make a suggestion about the car, a 2005 will have more problems as it gets older. For $1000 down, you can put a down payment on a new car or lease one for substantially less. If you are worried about driving too many miles on a lease, at the end of the lease period you can buy the car out for the same amount that you'd pay for a good used car.

Thanks for the suggestion, @skydiverjim. In 38 years of marriage we've never had a completely "new" car - the closest we've gotten was once when we got a car that was only two years old. Unfortunately, we can't afford a car payment, even though we could come up with the down payment. We're basically supporting my son's family right now as both he and his wife have debilitating health problems, but neither of them can disability, and they are unable to work. Tough times! I very much appreciate you taking the time to respond!

Not sure where you're located but maybe look into a buy here pay here [bhph] they usually work with a down payment then payments until the car is paid off. Not all of them are upstanding but if you can find a decent one maybe that would help get you away from your current vehicle.

If you can't afford a car payment it may be your best option to just fix the 🚗. For $1000 you are not going to be able to buy a very reliable car. I don't know how many miles are on the car or what else might go wrong next if you keep the car but you can always hope for the best.

Hope things work out with the car. Happy birthday to hubby, celebration plans sound lovely. Enjoy!

we had a similar problem last year. replace the transmission on our Rogue (second time) or get a new car. we decided we couldn't get anything comparable for the $3500. so my opinion, as long as the vehicle isn't riddled with other problems, fix it.

Please tell your hubby Happy Birthday for me. Sorry, you are having car troubles. Sounds like a difficult situation. It would be a good thing if your son (and maybe his wife) with the debilitating health problems could get disability so the entire burden isn't on you.

Yes, @Snowwhite100, both my son and his wife have applied for disability and gone through the whole process, with appeals, and still been denied. They might be moving into the house her mother left her when she died last year. They might not be so financially burdensome if they weren't downstairs. So easy for them to just say, "We're out of creamer," when they know I go to the grocery store to do my Price Monitoring jobs every morning. JUST found out 5 minutes ago that she FINALLY applied for SNAP benefits (food stamps). Please pray they get accepted for that!!! I've been urging them to do that for months!
