Debbie Cousins's Journal, 13 May 22

Well, I managed to get in six 8-oz bottles of water before I got to the plasma center this morning. Because I'm a New Donor, it took a LONNNNG time for them to process me. For some reason, I had to fill out the same forms I did yesterday, again. Then I had to have this whole flip chart book READ to me (their rules), and have a brief physical. By the time I actually got to the part where I was in position for the plasmapheresis, it had been almost three hours!

The procedure did NOT go as planned (or as I had prayed). Typically, whenever blood has to be drawn from me, the only vein they can find is a deep one just above the crease where the elbow bends. They had a tight blood pressure cuff on me (instead of tying that piece of rubber above the injection site). The girl took a LONG time trying to find a vein in that arm, and then she had to call someone else over to feel around, too. By this time, my hand was purple. Finally, the first girl stuck me, but she didn't give blood and had "infiltrated" me, which meant they couldn't stick that arm again. They felt around in my right arm, and wouldn't even TRY there because they couldn't feel anything.

SO, no blood draw!!! It turned out ok, though, because I still got paid the $150 for my first donation, and they said I can still come back next week, if my injection site isn't bruised. (There IS some slight bruising already, even though they put ice on it immediately after.) I'll get $150 for each of my first four appointments, and I can have two procedures in a 7-day period. I REALLY hope they can get blood next time, because otherwise, I might be rejected from the program (just my speculation).

My husband has to wait until next Thursday for his physical to find out whether the doctor thinks it is safe to take him OFF his blood pressure medication. Then, he has to be off it for a couple of days before he can get his first draw.

When I woke up this morning, I had a headache from caffeine withdrawal because I only had a shot glass of Diet Coke in the past 12 hours. I didn't take anything for it, because Excedrin has caffeine in it, and I didn't have any Tylenol. When I got home, I was SOOO glad to have a glass of Diet Coke! I'm on my second glass now, but I'm going to try to just drink water for the rest of the night after this. I also indulged in EIGHT Entenmann's Rich Frosted PopEm's (donut holes). I'm already at over 1,800 and there's still dinner ahead. I will mostly have cooked cabbage - which, if you haven't tried doing it, is delicious cooked in the Instant Pot with a cup of chicken broth and a stick of butter and a whole head of cabbage. Seven minutes on High, and Quick Release. Just needs a little salt and it's very yummy.

Ok, th-th-th-that's all folks
