Debbie Cousins's Journal, 26 May 22

Weight was down yesterday, but I forgot to check in yesterday morning, because I thought my bruise was gone enough to be able to give plasma. I went to the plasma center, and the nurse at the front desk said it WAS gone enough, so I answered the 67 questions at the kiosk and took a seat in the packed waiting room (19 people ahead of me). There I sat for over two hours, before they finally were ready to give me a finger prick, check vitals, etc. The nurse at THAT station said I could NOT give from my "good" arm, but that I could still donate from the other arm. Then it was another hour of waiting for my name to be called to actually get on a table.

Surprisingly, the phlebotomist WAS able to get blood from my problem arm. Blood flowed for about 5-10 minutes into the machine, then there was a problem. They tried a couple of different things, but were unable to get it started again. They moved the needle to another location but realized that it wasn't going to hold up for the whole process because it was clotting, so they concentrated on trying to get my blood back INTO me. If they can't return your blood, you have to wait 60-80 (or something terrible like that) before you can give again. They were able to get ALMOST all my blood back in (not enough missing to disqualify me), but they weren't able to get in the saline solution, so I had to drink a Gatorade before I could leave there. Unfortunately, ZERO plasma was collected.

I was there 3-1/2 hours, and they DID pay me for donating. I REALLY wanted to give a full plasma donation, though!

After the ordeal, I drank Diet Coke for the rest of the day. My right arm (the one they used) is terribly bruised! I won't be able to give from the other arm until it is healed, because the bruise is over 2" big. SO, back to hourly bruise treatments. I've been putting ice on it every waking hour, and the Arnica bruise cream. I'll try the chamomile tea and aloe plant today, too. I don't want to be out of commission for too long.

Dietwise, I've been doing pretty well. With having completed my food journal every day, it keeps me from my natural tendency to gorge myself. I still eat too many snacks, but my weight is holding, even with them, so I think I might have found a way to maintain my weight. I STILL want to lose, though, so I might start making some changes soon. Going to go to BJ's today to get two more cases of 8-oz waters (70 bottles to a case). The one I got last week is almost gone. Don't "have to" drink water until the day before I go back to donate plasma, but I will try to force myself to drink SOME between now and then.
