Debbie Cousins's Journal, 03 Aug 22

Calories for yesterday 1,585. Fiber 28.1. Fruits/Veggies: butter beans, watermelon, cherries, peach and the tomato sauce on my spaghetti. My honeydew finally ripened (after a week), and I cut that up to have starting today. I had some this morning and it was delicious. I think it's really hard to find a good honeydew, so I'm excited that it is nice and sweet! I'm really enjoying my summer fruits!

Today is a pool day. Reducing Diet Coke is hardest on pool days. I only take water with me to the pool, so I'm not tempted to over-indulge in DC. So far, praise the Lord, I have stuck with the 3-cans-a-day restriction for about five weeks! That may not seem like an accomplishment to most people, but it is MUCH better than drinking over 2-liters a day of artificial sweetener and caffeine.

The Premier Protein shake I ordered from Amazon is delayed until arrival today. That's ok - it's going to be a challenge to fit in that extra 160 calories. What is the best way to make it the texture (thickness?) of a chocolate shake? Can you freeze the shake in an ice cube tray and then just blend it up?

Today, if I remember, I am going to try to WALK in the pool. Usually, I only go in a couple of times, and I just stand there while my grandson is playing. Today, I'm going to strive to walk the length of the pool (3'-5' deep, 1/2 the length of an Olympic pool) maybe six times? That would be SOMETHING. I tried treading water at the beginning of the season, but it was too straining on my knee. Maybe I'll give that another try, as well, and see if I can do it without pain.

Hope everyone has a good day! Stick to your guns. Run the good race. Try to be able to pat yourself on the back at the end of the day.

Good morning Debbie :-) Cutting down on something I'm used to (good or not so good for me) is a big deal, yours just happens to be DC. I get it! Something I've been doing that helped more than I thought it would was just changing the word 'restricted' and 'cheat' foods/drink to 'bonus' and 'reward'. (I taped it to my large basket of Lindt Lindor Truffles gifted to me in February. I started this in March and most of them, about 200, are still in the fridge). I don't know if this would help you, maybe, I hope so. It's a mindset change we do in our own time in our own way. I do hope you can do the pool walk, cheering you on as always :-)

Have a good day Debbie!

Debbie, I mix my protein powder with unsweetened almond milk and coffee - enough to fill a mason jar, then shake it up until dissolved. The almond milk gives it the creaminess, and the coffee give it flavor and makes it go further. I drink it all morning rather than all at once.

Wow, your weight is down. Congratulations on your reduction of DC. It sounds good to try to walk a little in the water if your knee can handle it. How are your lips doing?

@LivinBreezy, I've been trying to think of my fruit as being "bonuses" and "rewards." It's really delicious, and I get so much MORE of it than I would get if I was just having a donut hole - a whole bowl of watermelon or cantaloupe or honeydew, or 21 cherries are all about 90 calories each; the donut hole is 85 calories. A large peach is only 61 calories. I've still got that 1/8th box of donut holes in the fridge, but I've been resisting. @Snowwhite100, my mouth is still cracked in the corners. I called the dentist because I'm supposed to have a cleaning on Tuesday and didn't relish the thought of having to "open wide." They said the dentist could give me a prescription for something for my mouth that would probably make it better. So, hopefully some relief is on the horizon. I tried walking the length of the pool a few times. Not really very effective when I get into the deeper water because I'm so, shall we say, "buoyant." I did it two times up and back, though, just so I could say I did "something" more than I usually do. We'll see how my knee feels tomorrow. Next time, I'll walk side to side in the 3' depth. It will be a better "workout" for me.

@larilyn, the one I ordered is the liquid shake, but thanks for the advice. Who knows, I might switch to protein powder and the suggestion will come in handy.

Debbie, check your PP shakes as they were recalled. You can check at gov/recall.org if I remember news right. I freeze soft bananas to put in my shakes. I buy the vanilla ones so sometimes I add choc protein powder as well or fruit. Add Apples, spinach, and cucumber, along with frozen bananas for a really healthy drink

Thanks for the heads up, Diana. I will check that out. I think I would like the frozen banana in the shake, because it would give it some extra thickness. I've got three on the counter right now that are too soft for just eating. I'll flash freeze those now!

What are butter beans and how are they prepared?

Butter beans are also called baby lima beans. I buy them frozen in 28-oz packages. I cook them very Southern-style! In my InstantPot, I place one stick of butter, the two packages of butter beans, 3/4-pound of country ham, diced into 1/4" cubes and 1-1/2 tbsp. of Kosher salt. Cook on High Pressure for 22 minutes and then let Natural release until the pin drops. Melt-in-your-mouth good. NOT for someone who is watching their salt intake. Very filling and satisfying though, and high in fiber.

Ooops, @Doogle, forgot to say that I cover them with water to about 1" over the tops of the beans before cooking. My husband likes all the "juice" and puts a slice of bread in his bowl. I just put a little of the butter that comes to the top, but drain the beans and just eat them that way.

Wow, those sound delicious. I never eat lima beans but I’ll have to try them. Thanks for the info!
