Debbie Cousins's Journal, 10 Jul 23

Met all my goals yesterday: Protein = 101.4g. Fiber = 32.9g. Calories = 1,773. Water = 8 cups. Walking = 5 miles. Did all pre-surgery PT exercises. Drank 6 cans of Diet Coke.

I'm a little disappointed with my weigh-in this morning. 188.4 is only 0.2 pounds down for the week. With trying to get in the higher Fiber and Protein, I am having to take in more calories (averaged 1,868 a day this past week). Still new to this, so working on finding lower calorie options but still getting in the macros that are important to me.

Today is my pre-surgery surgeon appointment. Hooray! Surgery is almost here! I'm really looking forward to getting a new knee. Amazing that science has progressed to where we can just take out an old, worn out body part and put in a new one, LOL! The surgeon asked me at my last visit what my goal was for surgery - what I wanted the outcome results to be. I told him I didn't have any aspirations to be a World Class Skier or anything. I just want to be able to walk on unlevel ground, go up and down stairs like a normal person (instead of having to go down sideways, putting both feet on each stair before I can go down another one), quickly get back up to walking 5 miles a day, and be able to cross my legs - all without pain. May it be so.

Got up at 1:00am to be able to get in my walking and exercises before I have to be at the surgeon appointment at 8:45. It's already 4:05am - still a lot left to do!

praying for a speedy recovery and that you can get back to doing all the things you want to do with no issue. I'm having to loose weight also for knee surgery it's not a knee replacement surgery yet but if they don't fix it this time I think next time will be a replacement. congratulations on getting your goals met.

We hit plateaus often in our weight journey. You have done so well losing and walking. Hope your appointment went well. I'm so glad you aren't really nervous about the surgery. You will have to be kind to yourself with your exercise and weight loss after the surgery. I realize you well know that and are prepared for it.

Not sure if I'm more interested in your weight loss or sleeping patterns. 😁

I've been trying to prioritize protein a bit more and have been faced the same struggle. I wind up adding calories, which makes it harder to keep my weight down. Still figuring it out myself! I know I need to cut the empty calories at work (sweets), but I'm an anxiety eater. I think grains are valuable in the diet, but am trying to keep them at a reasonable level. Good luck with it! As always, I'm rooting for you!

I'm curious how you're walking 5 miles and still need knee surgery.

Debbie the way i eat isn’t all that tasty but i will share a little. Im stuck at around 1000 calories (up from 700-800) to still be able to lose weight due to adrenal failure and mtfhr gene mutation effecting metabolism function. (Super low).. with that said, i have almost daily a minimum of one protein shake (currently body fortress). 40 grams protein. Then i have 2-3 oz of chicken often canned chicken from Costco (1/3 can) i mix the whole can w 2 TB mayo onions and Craisens and put on a low carb Don Pancho tortilla 45 calories. This gives me 20 grams of protein so now im at 60 for the day. I make a banana protein choc chip muffin that has about 7 calories and have 1-2 a day and dinner is either another protein shake (Ive been doing smoothies with 1 cup strawberries, 1 banana and 5 calorie Hersheys sugar free syrup) and then im at 100 grams. Don’t always hit it. If i dont do 2nd protein shake at dinner i do more chicken and 1/4 cup unsalted nuts or almonds. Hope this helps. You have a larger calorie allowance than i do so you can still get tasty food in for the day.

Wow, Deb, I just remembered that years ago I had a good buddy who had terrible knee pain - and she was a diet coke junky. Someone persuaded her to give up the Coke and her knee pain vanished. Ten years later she had to have the knee replaced, but she was convinced it was the Coke. Worth a try?

I just Googled it. Many articles. Look it up and check it out. I'm so impressed with the progress you've made. Maybe this would help.

erikahollister, my knees are weird. I can walk without too much pain, but it really bothers me to stand still or attempt stairs. As to the Diet Coke - I don’t smoke, drink, or do drugs. DC is my biggest vice. davidsprincess, I go to bed at 5pm every “night” (afternoon, to some!) and get up usually between 1-3am. It works for us. My husband works from home (a Pastor, and also an early riser). He is ready to wind down sermon preparation by about 4:30, and then he likes to chill in front of the tv. (I don’t care much for tv for the past couple years.) Everybody else (especially this of you who said you are praying for me), I sincerely appreciate all your comments and encouragement. Next post will be update from today’s surgeon visit.
