Debbie Cousins's Journal, 25 Jul 23

Now I can say, “Surgery is day after tomorrow!” SO looking forward to getting a new knee. I know there’ll be lots of pain for awhile afterward and months of physical therapy; but, hopefully it will be all worth it.

Specifically, I’m praying that the arthritis pain will be alleviated, that I’ll be able to do stairs like a normal person, squat, and that I’ll be able to get back to my walking regimen quickly. No aspirations of being an Olympic Skier or running a marathon - just having a knee that functions as it is supposed to do.

I’ll do my best to post updates. Won’t be able to accurately post anything the hospital serves me; but, I’m taking a lot of food, which I CAN record.

Hey Debbie i want to share this with you. Last year i was so crippled i could barely walk. The pain would make me cry sometimes. It kept me awake at night with the throbbing and severely affected my sleep. Because i wont do narcotics (except post surgeries) i would only take advil or Tylenol to help with pain. Which it didnt help much. Here’s the scoop. Found out that i was in the end stages of osteoarthritis in my right hip (and yes i have it in the left as well just not as advanced), along with a cyst on the hip bone, bone shards rubbing around in there and marrow edema. As well i was born with hip dysplasia but thats a whole different story. GUESS WHAT!!!!!! I have no pain (once in a while a little throb but no big deal). Listen!!! No pain. This leg and hip were killing me the last 8 years and we all thought was coming from bulging discs. You are going to be SOOOOO happy! Do EVERYTHING and more that p.t. Asks you to and be diligent. Stay up on the protein to help with post surgical repair. Make sure you are drinking electrolytes post surgery as well (helps with swelling). Im incredibly happy for you. You will be amazed. God is so good my friend.

The homeopathic remedy, Arnica, is very helpful for post surgery bruising and swelling. also it's a component of Rescue Remedy, both available at health or Whole Foods stores.

My 79 year old mother had knee surgery this summer. She stayed with us while she healed and went through physical therapy. She is back at home and not using a cane or a walker. She is walking great. Praying for a successful surgery and a speedy recovery.

I was same position as "YearofHealth2023" I (70yrs) would trail my Athletic younger Wife(59) with walking sticks as she would stop at points so I could catch up. She was helpful and patient. Today (71) 2 knee replace later, we keep pace. walk, hike, bike together. Push yourself through after physical surgery therapy. No pain no gain.

Debbie I snuck arnica into the hospital when my husband was in the ICU after a terrible car accident. They were amazed at how quickly his brain swelling resolved and how quickly his visible bruising resolved. Best wishes for your surgery!

I had knee replacement 2years ago. The recovery was tough the first month but now I’m great, walking fast and far. Well worth it. Good luck!
