Debbie Cousins's Journal, 07 Sep 23

Knee pain was Level #5 all day yesterday, and #6 this morning. At PT, she didn’t make me do any exercises. She manually manipulated it, used ultrasound heat, a souped-up TENS machine and the ice compression therapy. She made me promise I would NOT do any PT exercises today and that I’d cut back on the walking (she really wanted me not to walk ANY, but I told her I’d cut down to 2 miles today). She said I was an “overachiever!” I’m not sure anyone has ever called me that in my whole life. Felt kinda good. So, lots of icing and elevating today, and a nap! Yippee! It will mess up my accomplishment chart, but I’ll just write “recuperation” under today’s Exercises section. Feeling a little more in control as far as eating today. Hopefully, it’ll hold til midnight!

You might want to listen to your PT, even though you've been so dedicated to walking, so you don't set yourself back. You can always adjust your calories down to compensate. I once was forbidden to lift anything over 5 pounds, and I hated it, but it helped me to heal.

I hope you listen to her advice.

If I may add, Debbie, I understand the frustration with restrictions. Until I had the lifting limit, I never realized how many things weighed more than 5 pounds. Had to ask for help all the time. I was mortified at the grocery store when I had to ask them to take my bags out and put them in my trunk, knowing that I looked perfectly fit and healthy. As much as you want to walk, sometimes you have to back off to heal properly

Overachieving in this case can mean it will take that much longer to heal and could cause permanent damage.

Debbie, please heed the advice of your PT and remember to pace yourself with everything as much as you possibly can. Overachieving at this stage has the potential to jeopardize your healing process and it’s not worth your health. I’m excited to see you tracking your healing progress as well as those other awesome stats that we’re always looking forward to. You can Do This!!
