Debbie Cousins's Journal, 23 Sep 23

Things are going pretty well. Knee pain level has been between 4-5 with taking two 500mg Tylenol every 6 hours and one 800mg Ibuprofen every 8 hours. I’ve had a toothache since right after surgery in July, though, and got the surgeon’s permission to go to the dentist. I need a root canal on a molar (over $2,000!). The dental insurance will only pay $1,000, per “plan year,” so that leaves over $1,000 out of pocket — $1,000 we don’t have! I know the Lord will provide. I just don’t know how yet. Thankfully the tooth pain has only been a #3 pain level this week (#6 last week). Today is my 15th day walking 4 miles a day. Waiting for pain level to drop to 3-4 before increasing it any. Still doing PT twice a week + home PT every other day. Weight down this morning because I FINALLY had a good bowel movement (or two!).

I hope the tooth is fixed soon.

I once spent a month delaying a root canal. Took Advil or Tylenol every day, hoping it would go away. Unfortunately, when the pressure builds inside the tooth/nerve canal, it’s trapped there. Even if the pain is on and off, there’s no coming back. You will need the root canal to get relief. The pressure and nerve injury can’t heal on its own.

Debbie, I understand so well. About six months ago I gave up my dental insurance...it was over $170.00 a month and I couldn't afford it anymore. I always worry that I'll need dental work...we are in God's hands. I know I had Care Credit once and might need it again 💙

rcguenth and Kenna Morton, thanks for the tip about Care Credit. I also remember that when I needed glasses, I was able to finance them interest-free through SunBit. My decision now is whether this tooth is worth $2,600 to me (root canal and crown, minus $1.000 insurance will pay). Or, would it be better to just pay whatever the insurance wouldn’t cover to have it extracted? I’d have to do all the chewing on my right side, because one other tooth has already been pulled and the only other teeth on the back bottom left are both loose, and the dentist says I’ll lose them eventually. Maybe I should see how much it would cost out-of-pocket for a second opinion about the root canal!

We're so close to the end of the year. Ask your dentist to bill it over two years. Bill the preliminary work before december ends, then the final work in January. My dentist suggested this when I had big bills that would only be partially covered.

erikahollister, good idea except that my new “plan year” with the insurance doesn’t start until 6/1/24. Maybe I can tough it out until May, with the Lord’s help.
