Debbie Cousins's Journal, 27 Jan 24

Weight continuing to climb. I said I would NOT let it go above 185, and now it's almost 10 pounds above that. I've gained over 15 pounds since Thanksgiving. My knees are hurting because I haven't done ANY walking or PT exercises. I've been drinking TWELVE cans of Diet Coke a day (no water at all). Stress level in the home is very high right now, mostly because of my grandson's misbehavior.

I had a phone meeting with my psychiatrist yesterday (it wasn't supposed to be until March, but I had them move it up). I'm feeling pretty optimistic after the meeting. She's increasing my Wellbutrin from 300mg to 450mg (the maximum dose allowed). She said it will help to give me some motivation, and it will help with weight loss. She also said I need to make a LOT of changes. The biggest one that concerned her was the Diet Coke. She said that the caffeine makes anxiety worse and that (ideally) I need to gradually cut down to only 1 can a day. She suggested reducing intake by 2 cans a week, but I'm going to try to cut it more quickly than that.

She also said that I need to be walking at least 10 minutes a day. I'm going to make it 30 minutes, because then, at least, I'll be getting in an intentional mile. She also said I need to be drinking water! She said she'd like to see me drinking 4 bottles of water a day (64oz). I'm starting today with trying to get in TWO bottles. At least it's something.

Most importantly, she wants me to follow-up on getting an appointment with a counselor to help navigate this stressful home situation. I had contacted two places, but they never got back with me. She was supposed to email me a list yesterday of places that accept Medicare, but she must have forgotten. I called back late yesterday afternoon to remind her, but they were already closed. It is on my To Do List to call again on Monday.

She wants to talk to me again in 6 weeks, unless things get even worse.

To anyone who thinks that none of this has anything to do with diet, just move along without commenting

I don't have any specific plans yet with regard to my excessive eating. I've been averaging over 2,500 calories a day (closer to 3,000 most days). Hopefully, the increased walking, drinking water, cutting back on Diet Coke, and increasing the Wellbutrin will make enough difference to at least keep me from continuing to GAIN.

You have an awesome doctor!! I am so relieved to see that she wants to follow you more closely. You need this attention. Someone needs to help you! I totally agree with her about the Diet Coke and have observed many people here commenting on it, including me. As an R.N. I consider caffeine to be a legal drug. And you are at a level of toxicity with it. Debbie, you are such a great person and everyone here loves you. Please accomplish this. You can do it. I had to give up caffeine when I was 30. I didn't use a lot but any for me was dangerous. You are going to have serious health problems if you don't. You must call your doctor back on Monday and get that referral list. You need help and it sounds like your grandson needs help too. I hope you get the 10 minutes of walking in a day. If you have time for 30 minutes great but try not to put too much stress on yourself. You are already buckling under it. I am praying for you. Hugs.

Keep up the good work Debbie - the fact that you are here and writing your goals and advocating for yourself… each breath we begin again!

Lots of stress. You have probably thought of this already, but: 1) Can grandson go to the psychiatrist to learn to behave or get tough love? 2) Can he be relegated to another relative for a while so you can continue to recover from your surgery and do PT?

Do you like hot tea with no sugar? I find having a cup of tea when I have cravings helps. Just making it and sitting down to enjoy it really helps my mood. I had to just stop buying soda period. If it's not in my house I don't get it. My son loves soda so I told him he can go buy himself a can when he wants it no extras in the house. I am completely off soda. Trying to help him get off too. We both need to lose. My knees have gotten worse with weight gain. That is my main reason to lose weight. I do not want knee replacent surgery. So many of my friends have had it and it doesn't always help.

Have you thought of changing to caffeine free Diet Coke? For at least some of what you drink. Years ago I switched from regular coffee to decaffeinated. It tasted the same to me. After a couple weeks I stopped wanting coffee at all because without the caffeine I wasn't addicted to it. I also don't drink enough water, I find it boring. Good luck with all you are dealing with

I understand stress eating. Have you tried meditation or other relaxation exercises such as yoga? It may help.

I like to take a sip out of my 16oz bottle of water. Pull the string off then fold and insert one herbal, caffeine free, Bengal Spice tea bag. And leave the bottle in the refrigerator overnight to cold brew. For me it is a great substitute for a Coca-Cola without any need for added sugar or caffeine. Congratulations! You have made the turn. Thats often the hardest part. Now its just a walk in your new direction.

Good luck! I hope the caffeine withdrawal isn't too bad. It's true though that stuff, even though I also love it, just isn't that good for you.

That Diet Coke is definitely not good for you. Have you tried water with lemon juice added? That’s what I drink. Sending you positive thoughts.

Try joining a gym that how I started walking now I’m down to 143 started at 198, one step at a time I don’t like water myself but if you add lemon and a equal packet it makes a huge difference
