I went to the new obesity clinic today. I was pleasantly surprised. I was weighed and measured by the nurse who came up with a lower weight figure than I get at home (only in grams). She asked questions and gave me a questionnaire which was passed on to the Doctor who I saw next.

The Doctor went through each sheet with me and came up with something I didn't expect. She's going to put me on a partial 'shake' diet with me eating only dinner. I see the dietitian in a fortnight and then I can start. She's confident she'll get 15 kilos off me in 3 months. She's arranging gentle, manageable exercise as well as psychological support. There's more but my head is still taking it all in since I got home an hour ago.

It was heartening to have another brain working on my weight loss problems with me. I have so many limitations that make the mountain seem so high: - mainly the fact that I'm so physically impaired. I have 2 rotator cuff injuries that have weakened my arms to 'wet paper bag' status which rules out any arm exercises with weights, a paralysed right leg, recently broken, in a heavy 5 kilo leg brace which rules out walking, running, squats etc. The weakened arms can hardly help me around on the crutches and then there's the breathlessness, partly from the heavy weight I'm carrying but also because I am an asthmatic.

Some of the problems I've been trying to solve are one of the exercises I can do quite well is hydrotherapy but I have already had my allotted time in the Hospital pool - they ration everybody to 7 weeks and I had mine after the leg broke. So that rules that out.

I've tried other private places but none of them help you into the water. You can't get close to the pool side if you have to skid across wet tiles on crutches using only one leg, especially when you're heavy. So I need a wheelchair and someone to assist to get in and out of the water and they just don't grow on trees.

So it's been a struggle but maybe I'm about to turn a corner. I'm not giving up.
