"This new study by Templeman et al. doesn't look good for people that like long intermittent fasts.

The researchers compared weight loss diets with 25% constant daily energy restriction vs. complete alternate day fasting with 0% energy intake during the 24-hour fasts and 150% energy intake in between. The study was in healthy adults.

So same weekly energy intake and macros but either with long fasting or without.

The fasting group lost less body fat, probably because they experienced a significant reduction in energy expenditure from physical activity, especially later on into the fasts.

Several other studies have pointed to reductions in physical activity level during fasting, which is why I don't recommend intermittent fasting (IF) during periods of high physical activity, and not fasting too long in general.

The fasting group also lost considerably more lean body mass, although this was not significantly different from the other group.

Moreover, the fasting did not result in significant cardiometabolic health improvements, including insulin sensitivity and blood blood sugar levels after eating.

And the kicker: the fasting did not result in favorable changes in gene expression of inflammation and autophagy.

My recommendations:
- Don't fast during prolonged periods of high physical activity.
- Don't fast more than ~20 hours, preferably no more than ~16.
- If you want to implement short, aggressive deficits in your diet, do protein sparing modified fast (PSMF) periods: maintain a high protein intake during the 'fast' to keep your metabolism up and prevent muscle loss."- Menno Henselmans

She means only eating chocolate. Like when people say a liquid fast, they only have liquids.

Always good solid information Diablo. Thank you. And I'm enjoying these conversations. 💕 DP, I completely agree about the less rules strategy. My body (digestive system in particular) is rebelling presently, so no rules for me for a few days. 😊

Yeah, I don't like it when people refuse to read or listen to anything outside their little fasting/keto/vegan/whatever bubble and when they take their personal experience (the mechanics of which they do not usually understand) and make extravagant claims about the magic of their diet.

Very interesting! I tried to do cardio fasting and IF but I work out pretty hard and I need that energy boost I get from eating breakfast.

Diablo I really like this article, and as usual your science-based empirical data puts the eating disorder in my brain to rest. I often feel guilty for not having a longer than 16 hour fast. And now I’m feeling like a winner 🤓 And maybe my craving for hard boiled eggs as a snack while I’m fasting has something more to it than I previously thought.

And I’m going to plan a chocolate fast for the week during my birthday in August.

Thanks for sharing! I was kicking myself for eating a snack pre workout because I just read how great it is to work out in a fasted state (high levels of HGH)? Now I don’t feel like such a loser

I appreciate your bringing science to the discussion! Thanks!

Thank you for sharing. I try to keep mine at a 16 hour window

Red, there is nothing great about a fasted state. Eating before and after is always better.

I used to brag about "working out" fasted. That was back when working out for me was a short walk or doing 12 minutes of a supposedly "high intensity" YouTube workout that involved mostly jumping for 30 seconds and then doing nothing for 30. So six minutes of jumping. Like Mermee, I notice a difference in my performance if I don't eat enough before a workout.

does anyone know how to reset a new goal

You guys are all such fun to "listen in" on! And thanks, Diablo for always having good info! There are times when I fast more than 24 hours, but most often it is after a day of far too much endulgence. I don't feel a lack for working out because I have all the energy I stored the day before. Only in the evening might I feel a slump. I don't love doing this, and it isn't a "penance" for over eating. It is a "reset" to get back on track... Sort of to get my weekly average balanced. Normally, when in a deficit, I sure see my energy level get lower and lower for lifting as the days of careful eating build. I am sure it is the struggle you body builders face all the time... Thus the bulk and cutting process.

Thanks for always sharing well-researched information Diablo, you're the best! Fasting is definitely not part of my WOE, but I do tend to eat later in the day than many other people on this site; breakfast often around 10 a.m., Dinner usually around 9-9:30 p.m. Also, since I swim laps at 5 a.m. I'm doing that on an empty stomach. Probably not the best plan, but it suits my lifestyle.
