Eat More to Lose More | Nutrition Myths

1.) The Claim

•1.) If you diet too hard for too long, your metabolism begins to slow

•2.) Further decreases in food make you lose no more weight or can make you GAIN weight!

•3.) Eating MORE, not LESS, can make you LOSE WEIGHT!

•4.) If you're a chronic dieter, increasing your calories can literally make you begin to lose weight

2.) Reasons it's WRONG

•1.) Why is starvation EVEN A THING THEN?!
•Would we expect folks in hunger-affected regions to have uncontrolled weight GAIN?!

•2.) Thermodynamic laws are REAL!
•You can't gain weight by eating less
•UNLESS other fishy things are going on...

3.) Now, Now: Grains of Truth

•1.) When you diet hard, your NEAT CAN GO DOWN
• But that usually just slows weight loss
•GAINING from reduced NEAT without increasing calories is CRAZY RARE

•2.) Hormones can alter water dynamics
•Increased water intake during hypo diet
•Increased salt cravings hold water in
•This makes your weight stable or go up, though you're STILL LOSING tissue

•3.) RADICAL hunger can ensue
• Which means you can easily eat way more calories than you think you're eating
• Often coupled with "but I've been good on my diet, except weekends."

4.) Best Practices

•1.) Don't slash your calories like crazy
•Aim for a 500-1000kcal deficit per day via reduced cals AND increased activity

•2.) Don't diet for longer than 12 weeks at a time
•Or more than about 10% bodyweight at a time
•Take a 2/3 to 1.5x length maintenance phase after each diet, before the next one

•3.) Track your activity
• A step counter watch goes a long way to prevent NEAT loss

•4.) If you're prone to water balance issues:
• Keep stress low and sleep high
• Standardize your salt intake, and water intake to some extent

•5.) Be PATIENT with the scale
•Weight can stall for 2 weeks, then due to water balance, fall by 4lbs and stay down!
• Just stick to that plan and you're GUCCI... you won't retain your weight at a 1000kcal defict, I PROMISE

Asarver = Non-exercise Activity Thermogenesis - basically calories you expend through non-intentional movement. Tends to spontaneously decrease in a deficit (it's little things we're not even aware of, like fidgeting, how quickly we blink, how animated we are...)

When I'm well-fed, I'm constantly dancing and moving, even when I'm waiting in line or paying for something. Sometimes I get really weird looks. But activity like that (and not running or anything really hard) has been key for me.

Thanks for explaining LaughingChevre!

LC... He did that. That phase didn't last long but there was a period of time he was waking in the middle of the night to eat. (I do that sometimes just for fun) 😆

He = Diablo? Hahahaha. I once read about a midnight feast and always wanted to do that. Told my husband we should have a midnight feast and in his blunt Slavic way, he asked me whether I had lost my mind and said we need to film me with all my typical breakfast food and talking about midnight feasts while being "on a diet".

DP I thought what you said about water intake was very interesting and I used to chugg it back too thinking it was helping me. But I’m more cautious not to over water myself nowadays. Altho I didn’t get that water loss on the scale that I’m aware of but I feel better.. and pee less overnight 😂

Yes LC... He did all kinds of silly things and I think that's why he tries so hard to help people because it was so miserable and he was thrilled to learn the truth. Yes piggy...I was drinking probably 120 ounces a day. I still drink a lot of watery because I love it but it's closer to probably 64-84.

Hopefully this makes my 12 week macro/1000 calorie diet (+strength training) sound like a normal and sustainable thing. 👍

good points Diablo. I often feel I am sabotaging myself with stress mindset. Have to learn to eat more protein when I'm cutting the cals.

Yo, D. I'm all about what you are trying to share, but the bullets are confusing me. Which are you promoting and which are you calling BS on?

Well, the points after "The claim" are incorrect or at least not entirely true.

What’s the benefit to going on a maintenance break after 12 weeks?

Yes Diablo360x, carbs are not fatting. But the lack of them forces your body to produce glucose (blood sugar) for energy from another source by converting fat. But that works two fold. Not only is fat (whether from intake or storage) being converted and burned, but the conversion process in it self takes energy. Causing even more fat to be converted and burned. The body can not store carbs. It ether uses them for instant energy or converts them to fat to be stored ( so you must watch your fat intake too ). A low carb diet reverses that process. As you mentioned "water" (The Oh Holy Grail of weight loss). For the carb diet (or any diet) to work as planned you MUST reach maximum hydration. This means a minimum of 8-16 oz. bottles or 1 gal. of water per day. Even more if you do heavy cardo work-outs. Sleep is the next most important thing. Because the fats to carbs conversion process is accelerated while you are sleeping. Low carb diets are great for people who just want to lose weight and need to see results fast to keep their head in the game. Not so good for body builders and those who are working out to get toned. Because immediate available energy required for heavy work-outs is low. The low carb diet fits my goals. "Weight lose for physical, mental and social health in a reasonable amount of time". I've lost 33 lbs since June 1st and drop my blood pressure from 145/90 to 121/79. I also do 1 hour of cardo ( 4mph walking on treadmill) 6 days a week. WE GOT THIS BABY !!

No, carbs are indeed stored. The average body can store 2k calories worth of glycogen(superior energy) from carbs. You read an anti carb blurb, have been dieting for less than 2 months and think you have it all figured out. Fat is lost via taking in less energy than you expend. The law of thermodynamics govern all living creatures. The macro that is most easily converted to fat is fat, the clue is in the name. Carbs actually have to go a much more complicated process to be converted to body fat. Fat also has the lowest thermic effect so it also contains the most overall energy although slight.

"Similarly, the carbohydrate-insulin model of obesity, which theorizes that obesity is caused by carbs and the insulin response they evoke,[23] is not well-supported by the evidence.[24][25] In 2017, a meta-analysis of 32 controlled feeding studies was published.[26] Some of those studies were metabolic ward studies and some were free-living studies, but in each case, meals were supplied by the researchers, who wanted to ensure that each diet provided specific amounts of calories and nutrients (within each study, the diets were equal in calories and protein but not in fat and carbs). So what were the results? Low-fat diets resulted in greater fat loss (by an average of 16 grams per day) and greater energy expenditure (by an average of 26 calories per day). This would give low-fat diets a fat-loss advantage, though one “so small as to be physiologically meaningless”."

No hard feelings, good job on the loss. Just trying to spread some science. I was also at one time believing several nutritional/fat loss myths.

Princess, when Diablo talks about how miserable it was trying to do clean eating all the time, I think most (reasonable) people understand he is trying to save them time, unnecessary suffering/deprivation and perhaps money (on stupid stuff that doesn't work long-term). But of course, there will always be people who do not want the truth and want to blame carbs/food companies/restaurants/whatever.

I always think it’s just about burning more calories than you take in. Find you BMR and eat in deficit to that. Or am I oversimplifying things? I know those with diabetes and insulin probs have to watch their carbs but I reckon good old maths and sound tracking is the root to most of it.
