Tonight, Chance and I took our first steps in a world without Sadie or Shasta in the house. God, it really hurts to even type that. I’m doing mostly okay, with fits of intermittent sobbing. Olivia and I walked Chance to Dark Horse to share an ice cream, he was so well behaved we got to eat inside with him on the floor.

Shasta had a really good morning yesterday, I got her to eat a whole piece of pizza and a piece of quiche and some cookies. Sadie, on the other hand, suddenly couldn’t stand up without all four legs sliding out and was starting to cough from the tumors in her throat. By midday, i knew it was time to let go. I won’t go into the mechanics of it, but we had a loving afternoon with my mom and Olivia there to say goodbye. We took Chance with us so he wouldn’t look for them the way Shasta did with Hogan.

My sweet girls went together calmly with people they loved and trusted. Chance is doing okay, but we’re going up to the rescue tomorrow morning because he’s an anxious boy on his own. We’ll see what happens.

One of my favorite pics of the original pack in front of Luigi’s on a long walk. Some fabulous adventures, I’m really going to miss them. Sadie and I walked together most nights for over 16 years. Such a sweet and determined little thing she was.
