A couple of great workouts, today's was a good bit better and really shows why a surplus of calories is great for gaining muscle. Not only does it allow for enough nutrition to build muscle but it allows you to push yourself much more which will force your body to change. It also shows why a small deficit is important in your effort to retain as much lean muscle as possible. If you're eating so little that you're only able to workout half as hard, expect to lose more mass and strength. You're probably also pretty low in protein which means even more lean mass loss.

Tips to be as efficient as possible if your goal is to maximize your muscular potential:

1. Small calorie deficit
2. Resistance training to failure or close enough to where you're really pushing yourself.
3. High protein intake
4. Low intensity cardio if at all
5. Meal timing. For example some carbs and protein before and after training. 4+ evenly spread out meals throughout the day with a good amount of protein per meal.

I saw my occasional workout partner today. He is on another shift and we haven't worked out together in a long time. I was on a walk and he stopped. He said that I looked huge, like a meat truck lol. Anyway, I remember when I was jogging too much during the summer how he once passed me and sent a message of how I was swimming in my tank top since I was losing so much muscle. Fast walking isn't making me melt.

Excellent work!

Thanks, Jimmie! I forgot to mention how my friend was complaining about his arms not filling out his shirts like they used to. I told him to take it easy on the running or just quit. He says, "now you tell me." He listens to me when it comes to lifting and nutrition advice, he doesn't always take it but he listens cause he knows I am the nerd between the 2 of us. :P

This YouTube dude Paul Revelia (sp?) - physique competitor/coach - made the comment that he/bodybuilders in general are SEDENTARY. It gave me pause, but I think he's exactly right. Still giving me pause, especially as a lifelong cardio hater, who a month ago was struggling to run a freakin mile...

Yeah, the big ones for sure. I mean, imagine being 350 pounds in the off season and being a runner. LOL. But I know many naturals who prefer to be pretty active so that their calories don't have to go super low. I was following one who replaced all of his weight lost with a weighted vest and walked at least 10k steps so that he could get shredded on closer to 3k calories. In the past, he was dipping to 1500 or so if I recall correctly.

Calves are looking awesome Diablo. I recall you wanting to build them some months ago. Looks like you did just that! 💪🏻

Thanks, Wifey! I think working them every day is doing the trick. :D

Breco, that is very appreciated man! I try to motivate with said results while spreading good info.

If you say so Mermee! 😅 I'll take it but will still continue to improve, hopefully! 😊👊

Heard. Pretty sure this guy's natty too. He claims it and def not supraphysiological. And they're physique, not super size competitors. So how come vest man was able to get stage ready doing added weight cardio and for you and others it's super catabolic? Maybe he's going super low level and you were race training and your body adapted? To me, cardio should preferentially burn fat. That's what it's there for. I'm def physique first, but it seems ridiculous to have visible abs and be unable to run a mile, which was my state a week ago...

Oh, you can definitely be big with good cardio. From my understanding is that if you can get lean without the strenuous cardio, then you should do that to keep as much lean mass as possible. They just advise to avoid high impact cardio because it stresses the fast twitch fibers that you want fresh for your lifting sessions.

Also, what did you mean by Heard? Was that supposed to be a bodybuilder's name that autocorrected?
13 Jul 21 by member: -Diablo
So a lot of bicycling(not racing speed), elliptical, etc can be great as those exercises don't stress the fast twitch fibers as long as you eat some of the calories back and don't have too large of a deficit.

Yep. So it's sprint day OR lift day.

Looking massive! You do look big when you're out and about. Once, a few years ago, I almost ran off the road when I was driving because I saw you running -I was like...'Dang!❤️'. That would have been embarrassing to explain to the company why I crashed the car. Probably would've blamed a squirrel. I was probably trying to steer and stare while eating my blizzard. 😬 But I definitely think you are retaining size with the walking instead. Calf does look good. Nice work!

Heard = Understood. In context, I meant that your point wrt supraphysiological bbers and running was well taken.

Bingo. I may be able to work it in more if I didn't lift every day. I guess when I train for my Tough Mudder next year I can experiment with maybe lifting 4 days a week instead.

Speaking of being ripped and having bad cardio, one of the most fit looking guys I ever met looked like he was ready for the stage but couldn't hit a heavy bag for a minute without keeling over. Our very own member who looks like an anatomy chart(Hebrews) doesn't do much cardio if I recall correctly.
13 Jul 21 by member: -Diablo
Yep. We got a gym full of those guys. Then they're the SOF guys and Crossfitters who do the exact opposite and are ripped and super fit. And my neighbors, who run 50-100, miles every weekend and are fat. (Ha!) I don't cardio for cutting. Although I am now off to fastest morning cardio....
