Artificial sweeteners are NOT toxic. The studies performed on rats where they used 1 thousand times the normal dose are not relevant to humans. These are the only studies that show any adverse effects. This myth is still pretty prevalent in speaking to my co-workers so I thought I would share these links and a video from Layne Norton on the subject.

That's good to know. I've heard that my whole life. I never give a rat's ass... But nonetheless...

Love it. My mum (a NURSE for goodness' sake, should know better) actually believes that anything "artificial" is bad for you and believes if she just eats "close to nature" and avoids artificial sweeteners, she'll lose weight. Doesn't believe me about calories. Love it when Layne goes after artificial sweetener quackery.

Doesn't surprise me, my sister who is a nurse tried the bloodtype diet and she likes Dr. Berg. Nurses and doctors aren't who I'd go to for nutrition advice anyway. Most don't even take care of themselves, even after seeing firsthand what obesity does to people. My father's heart surgeon was morbidly obese.

Great. Let's assume that's true. It begs the question: Why would you use an artificial sweetener? Do you use margarine? Do you drink sports drinks with red dye? If you want sugar, use sugar.

Triangle-Woman - My thought exactly! If I want a touch of sweetener in my coffee or tea, I use sugar or honey. If I have the rare soda, I get the one full of sugar. Counting calories for weight management AND having real sugar are not mutually exclusive events.

Diablo, sadly, it is true that most doctors and nurses are not that well-educated on nutrition, tend to fall for the same popular misinformation that the rest of the public does and unfortunately, many are overweight themselves.

Yeah, let me waste calories on sugar when it isn't needed. I'd rather have a piece a cake over two sodas, thanks.

I opened 10 of the articles you cited. Most had no abstracts. Only great titles like, "[Sanzharbek Bakirovich Daniiarov (on his 50th birthday)] [Article in Russian] No authors listed One was done on a cow and one was done on a pig did not seem to reference artificial sweeteners. I stopped after that. Your post seems to lack substance (like artificial sweeteners themselves.)

Use artificial sweeteners or don't --- but don't make weight loss harder than it needs to be for people who do enjoy the taste and will drink a lot of diet soda instead of regular soda (and that IS a good, healthy decision, the number of calories it saves is huge) or who like sweetness in their protein shake or yogurt but don't want extra calories from sugar which is very calorically dense. The point is not to fear-monger without evidence regardless of what you choose to do personally.

Also, we aren't talking rare sodas, many people use diet drinks daily, better to go with the zero calorie drinks over 150-300 calories if you use them daily.

One article was titled: "Higher plant systems as monitors of environmental mutagens." No abstract available. What are you citing???!!! Did you think no one would actually look at the citations?

I knew the zealots would come out on this one ;)

Well, go ahead and show me a study on humans that shows adverse effects of artificial sweeteners. They've been studied to death. Where is all the proof, Triangle-Woman?

Another great article you cited: "Arthritis drugs could halt the spread of breast cancer, study suggests" ??!!

These are the same people who don't understand that most of the so-called benefits of fasting can be attributed to weight loss (regardless of the method used) so they shouldn't be accusing anyone else of being lacking in substance.

Ah, thanks for pointing that out, the links are cut off. I will delete them and you can click on the clickable links under Layne's video.

For some reason Youtube doesn't post the full link, all of the links cut the last 3 numbers off. Thanks, Triangle.

Does not matter whether they are or not good for you or not. I have never liked sodas with or without sugar. Do as you wish. I'm not your mother. But don't be chest thumping and making global pronouncements while trying to use science as a shield when you are not actually citing any articles. I will also say that I'm not allergic to peanuts, but they are deadly for some people. Will you next cite articles about how great peanuts are?! THey are. For some. You are an experiment of one. Try food and if makes you feel good, GREAT!! If it does not, I won't denigrate you for your experience. As I have aged, I realize that eggplants make me feel like crap. I love them, but they are a nightshade I have become more sensitive to their effects. I'm not going to start citing studies about nightshades and their detrimental effects. And I still choose to eat egg plant occasionally, only if I think it is prepared in such an amazing way I can't possibly say no. I do this knowing it is probably a poor life choice. So you do you.
