Debbie Cousins's Journal, 03 May 21

Day #1 of getting back on track. Damage done: regained all but two of the pounds I lost with my 12-day fast in March. I've been totally out of control - eating ALL day, anything I want, and back to drinking 2 liters of Diet Coke a day. Once again, I BEGIN. I prayed last night and asked God to deliver me from the sin of Gluttony and to remove the stronghold which the enemy has in my stomach. TODAY, I have the resolve to skip breakfast and just have a cup of hot tea. I don't know where it will go from there.

The "problem" with my 12-day fast was that it wasn't LONG enough to obtain the results I was looking for, either in losing the amount of weight that I need to lose, or (more importantly) breaking the devil's stronghold in my stomach.

Yes, I'm fasting again. I don't know how long it will last. I know that I have no strength in and of myself to overcome this addiction to food. I am entering this prayerfully, and informedly, and I don't expect everyone to understand or to agree with what I am doing. I am am NOT suggesting that anyone follow my example. This is a personal thing, between me and God - but I would appreciate any supportive comments and/or prayers on my behalf.

I just wanted to let y'all know what my intentions are, because I WILL be using the weight tracker again, and I will strive to get back to being supportive of other FS friends - new and old. Bon Voyage!

Eating addiction is tough but we are even tougher. I also emotionally eat and when I am worried or going through tough times or stressed I eat. I am trying to find healthier ways to cope. Praying for you and even though I may be too hectic to respond I always read your messages.

I finally got control of the carbs by doing protein days. Yesterday I had some cabbage salad and was afraid I'd see a gain today but didn't. It is so easy to become enslaved again to eating what I want, when I want, as much as i want. So easily enslaved. So hard to break free. Have I learned yet that I just can't have certain foods? Please God help me remember how tough it is to get back on track.

Jesus said "When you fast... Let's do all as unto the LORD.

I have been struggling as well. I try to remember this mantra I saw when I start getting cravings: Angels of physicality, Angels divine, Please increase my self control, Let body perfection be mine. 😇😇😇

So glad to hear from you! Yes, eating/food addiction is HARD. It's incredibly easy to fall back into old habits and doesn't seem to take long at all to undo progress. Sending strength and prayers 💖

This looks like the beginning of a very seriously unhealthy relationship with food. Why not just try a more moderate approach over time? 1500 calories a day? 500 calories per meal? This feast/famine is not working.

Debbie, having read your introduction and followed your progress for a few months now, I think you might benefit from seeing a counselor or therapist of some sort to help guide you and get to the bottom of some of your triggers. It just seems to me like there's an established pattern of doing well and then losing control, and I'm worried that's beginning to polarize to even greater extremes. It's a personal journey, but you also deserve to ask for help.

Hi Debbie! I want to first of all congratulate you for recognizing today as truly the first day of the rest of your life! A great opportunity to hit restart. As it relates to your post, I generally stay away from sharing any advice; only encouragement. As a fellow Christian I am making an exception today. You may want to consider continuing in prayer, while at the same time allowing a health care provider to guide your wellness journey. My goal is wellness; which can include weight loss and management. Yours might have similar goals. Whatever you choose, let it be a lifestyle rather than a diet choice and something that can be done for a lifetime. Also, depending on your overall health, your health care provider may want you to be healthy just where you are. Give yourself a hug. No judgement here. All the best!

I wish for you a safe journey to better health and happiness for you are certainly in a dark spot today. I know you have been following my weight loss journey and are very supportive so I wish to suggest some ideas for you to consider. I do not support keto diets and I know lots of folks do, that’s fine. I do support a whole food plant base diet such as McDougall’s (https://www.drmcdougall.com/pdf/dr-mcdougalls-cpb-english.pdf). A mono diet such as Mary’s Mini or Spudfit.com which is based on potatoes 🥔 can be a great way to give yourself permission turn your back on all food and reset. I have cooked potatoes in my fridge at all time. You would be amazed at how flavorful and satisfying a cold potato can be! Finally, fasting is another to reset but you shouldn’t go back to your old foods but instead transition back with whole foods like an amazing banana 🍌! I make no health claims but will tell you that I m down 30 pounds in 15 months most of since December,2020 and I am off all meds and supplements except for once weekly B12. It’s not magic, it’s science and common sense. You know what to do. 🤗❤️👏

Dear Debbie, I love you and am praying for you. I think fasting is fine to break what "I call an addiction" to diet drinks and unhealthy processed foods. I believe I have been addicted to sugar and high carbs, regardless of what other people think about it. I haven't any idea how long it is prudent or safe for you to fast. I so hope when you come off the fast you will not have unhealthy processed foods. They not only are bad for you but trigger you to want more and more. As far as health care providers, they come with many different opinions. The dietitian we saw at UCLA told my husband and me to each eat 7 servings of grains a day. At 79 years old, 5 foot 1/2 inch, and very sedentary because of my back, I eat 1200 or fewer calories a day. Where would my nutrition come from if I ate 7 slices of bread a day? I would be diabetic very quickly. I was pre-diabetic, and this was a conference for diabetics. I am happy to report that since I have gone off sugar and high carbs like bread since December, I am no longer pre-diabetic. May I please say gently that I am praying for you to God, our Lord, and Savior, but not to angels, which is pretty scary. Angels are created beings and are messengers for/from God, and I am grateful to God for them. I know everyone here wants your best and we all support you. You have so many people that just want to support you in the best way we know how.

Debbie, Best wishes on your re-start. We all have to do it now and then and I cheer you on! Seems like I need to restart every few weeks. Tuesday is usually my best re-start day -- further from the weekend where I overate! Keep on keeping on, no matter how you do it. Skipping breakfast except for tea is a good start!

Debbie you are a star. Your approach, attitude, determination and results on your last fast were impressive and inspired many. Including me. I sent many "plateaued" folks to read your story and I have no doubt countless pounds of fat have been torched as a result. The fact that you had a rebound does not diminish that accomplishment one bit. Rebounding is not some failing. It is the exact opposite. It is A GIFT. Every dieter rebounds. Every. Single. One. Over and over again. Right up until they devote the same effort to coming off their diet as they did to losing their fat. The gift is the wisdom that you need to learn how to come off your fast just as you learned how to fast. I am 100% sure you know exactly how to do that!. Let's go!
