Kate_ED's Journal, 14 May 23

Ha! Another lesson to be learned. Earlier this week, I was excited to see mid 73's on the scale. Then I blew it on Thursday & Friday. What I got wrong:
Thursday I was out for dinner and stuck with low carb. After dinner we went for dessert - to a Melbourne dessert cafe that specialises in gluten-free lowcarb desserts! Wow - I felt I had free reign and enjoyed a serve of their yummy lowcarb burnt Basque cheesecake. Only 2g carbs! (but still 315 calories)
Friday: Didn't have time to prepare lunch. I snacked on a couple of lowcarb caulifower cheesy muffins from the freezer. By the afternoon I was hungry and ate 3-4 serves of the no sugar chocolate I had in my bag. Got home and had some low carb pork crackling before making dinner. Dinner was bolognese nachos - only 5 corn chips on mine, but probably more generous with cheese and sour cream than I needed to be. All low carb, but excess calories.

The outcome: These choices reversed any weightloss I had achieved earlier in the week.

The lesson: Low carb does not guarantee weight loss. Calorie deficit is the key to weight loss. Low carb is the key to reducing blood glucose/energy spikes and troughs . Low carb stabilises blood glucose levels and thereby curbs some cravings and hunger. But eating excess calories, regardless of the macros, will put weight on.
74.5 kg Lost so far: 11.5 kg.    Still to go: 3.5 kg.    Diet followed: Reasonably Well.

At least the cheesecake was delicious! I will plan my calories more carefully next time, and maybe stick with half a serve. https://www.facebook.com/regretlessau

Don't beat yourself up for these choices! Making sure you ate when you were too busy to prep food is a win. Weight will fluctuate randomly and most of that fluctuation is water, so don't stress about 100g here or there. And imo weight loss absolutely isn't worth it is you can't enjoy a delicious dessert on a night out !!! You're doing great 💪

I would stay away stuff like cheesy because they are always high in fats and carbs. If I were to eat a whole pizza I usually a bbq chicken pizza my weight the next shot up by 3 or 4 kilos. The way to offset this is just get back on diet previously and go from there and in 2 or 3 days your weight will get back to where before. I usually cut out fats and carbs for 1 day or 2 just eat chicken breast with plain salads to get back on diet asap and of course gotta do some extra walking

I think you starved your metabolism from carbs and overloaded it with fat. Remember fat always has double the amount of calories to carbs or protein. Sometimes you just have to listen to your body, if it's craving for some carbs that means it is looking for energy. When you don't give it, it will retail all the fat in your body - it activates Cortisol.

I was explaining this to my neighbour the other day. a friend was saying she was doing keto but wasn't losing weight. when I asked more they were eating maccas without the buns. I tried to explain that you still need to be careful of calories. Looks like you had a great weekend worth the kg to 2. This will sound horrible - but there is a chance you gained bathroom weight..... by that I mean when I have a bit too much bad food I get ... clogged up. hopefully after a bathroom session it helps from some extra

Thats why I don't understand diets that promote eating fats such as bacon,, butter etc.

For those that don't understand high fat diets, they also follow a calorie intake level. I'm on keto, which is high fat - extremely low carbohydrates, but still requires you to maintain a good level of calories. There is good science that backs these for SOME people, and require complete control most of the time. I have tried a million diets, and this is the only diet that has worked. It's more of a lifestyle change than diet and you can lose great weight on that!

Low carb high fat certainly did my head in for the first few weeks. Frying foods in olive oil for breakfast, adding whole egg mayonnaise to my salad, snacking on nuts. And on the other hand strictly limiting fruits, and higher carb vegetables. However, for me, when I've carefully eaten within my target calories and made choices that limit my carb intake to 50-75g per day, it has reliably helped me to lose weight. I find I don't struggle as much with afternoon cravings, and I am full at the end of my meal.

I'm following a csiro version - so saturated fats like bacon fat, heavy cream and butter are limited, favouring fats from olive oil and nuts.

Only weigh yourself once a week on Wednesdays. This allows time for you to counter any food celebrations from the weekend and is better for your state of mind. I do this as I find that my weight will fluctuate during the 7 day cycle. But give a true reflection of my weight. I go to the gym Monday to Friday and test Saturday and Sunday. I hope this helps you not stress about it too much. We still need to enjoy what we enjoy.😊
