Debbie Cousins's Journal, 07 Jul 23

Did everything on my goals list again yesterday, but just can’t eat enough to get it all in today! I DID drink my 8 cups of water and got in 27.5G of Fiber, but Protein is only 89.53. And I can’t eat or drink another thing. That’s what I get for sleeping in until 5:30 this morning. Just not enough waking hours in my day. Back to 3am (or earlier) wake-up tomorrow. Got in my 5 miles of walking, but did not do any of my PT exercises today. Tomorrow I will do better!

I go to bed at 5pm, lol. I’m a little late tonight. Have to get up at 2 to be ready to take the grandkids to the pool by 11. It takes over an hour and a half to do it all. Need the sleep before the 2am wake-up alarm

Why do you need more protein than that? Isn't that a lot? Guess I don't understand. I thought excess protein would also act like sugar in our bodies.

Sounds to me like you did quite well.

Snowie, protein is to help your body heal pre and post operatively. My surgeon recommended 120 grams for me and i think Debbie’s may be the same for her upcoming surgery. You also need protein when you are losing weight as well. The formula for healthy protein while in maintenance is current weight in kilograms multiplied by .80. So for a 150 pound woman for example would be 68.4 kilograms so minimum protein daily then would be 54-55 grams per day. Make sense? When the body has surgical trauma the extra protein helps to prepare the body and recovery is better.

Snowwhite100, the extra protein is necessary for healing after surgery. I'm just increasing it now to get into the habit so I'll give myself the best surgical outcome possible. Yearofhealth2023, I just put on my list to ask the surgeon on Monday, "How many grams of Protein should I be getting daily for the best surgical outcome?" We hadn't addressed this yet - I just remembered from when I had my GBS 16 years ago that they recommended Protein Shakes after surgery.

Year of Health, thank you for your post. My husband is having surgery in September and I wasn't thinking of extra protein.

Super welcome granby. I try and try to up my protein but my daily caloric limitations are so low it’s difficult. If i was able to have 1400+ calories a day i feel like it would be so easy. Just for daily living if you have any regular activity level as a female should be at least 100+ grams per day in my opinion. Of course im not a nutritionist.
