Debbie Cousins's Journal, 22 Oct 23

Yesterday was an "ok" day. I drank 4 bottles of water (64oz), and "only" drank 6 cans of Diet Coke (72oz). Still more DC than water, but I'm working on it. Protein was 124.96. Fiber was 32.8. BUT, calories were 1,775. The reason calories and fiber were so high is because last night I couldn't go to sleep after I took my sleeping medications. I got up and finished walking my 6 miles (had only walked 5.5 miles before I took the meds at 5pm). I remember that. What I DON'T remember is eating almost all of a Quest Blueberry Muffin Protein Bar. The only reason I found out is because I didn't eat all of it, and put the last couple of bites in a ziploc bag. When I woke up later that night, I asked my husband if HE had eaten it, and he said no. Ambien eating!

As mentioned, got in my 6 miles, but I didn't do any PT exercises yesterday, because my knee was a pain level #6, and I didn't want to make it any worse! I don't usually do them on Sundays, but I will today, to make up for yesterday. In 5 days, it will be ONE YEAR since I started walking at least a mile a day. I've done it EVERY day, except on the day of knee surgery, and for the first couple of weeks after that. I don't think I've exercised every day for a year in any OTHER of the 69 years I've lived!

Haven't heard any more about Maebie. She will be back here on Tuesday after school. Her tennis season ended last Friday, so on the days when my daughter works (Thur, Fri, Sat), she will be with us after school until her mom gets off. Usually, we have let her stay down in the basement when her mom's working, but now we are going to have her stay up here with us, and do some things together as a family. The main reason we were letting her stay in the basement was that, when they're together, her little brother drives her crazy, picking on her and taunting her until she screams at him (understandably) and they get in a fight. We're going to have to put an end to that with my grandson.

Just got an idea!!! I just went on Amazon and ordered a Potholder-making loom and the loops to make 12 potholders. This is something that is easy enough for my grandson to do (putting on the first layer) and challenging enough for my granddaughter (weaving in the 2nd layer), and they can give them as Christmas presents! The loom and loops will be here tomorrow and I can refresh my memory on how to do them. I made some YEARS ago and gave to people as presents, and they loved them! Hooray!

Great protein and fiber! Kind of freaky about the Ambien eating. I hope you are not a sleep walker! Fantastic plan for your grandchildren too. I'm sure they are both awesome kids who just need a little steering in the right direction and you are the perfect one to do that. I loved my grandparents and would have done anything for them. I loved making pot holders as a kid and place mats too.

You simply floor me with your steadfastness in walking!!! I’ve tried numerous times to stay faithful to a puny exercise routine of one form or another……..and at the moment I’ve not done any exercise in months. Ugh. HOW DID YOU START and HOW DID YOU STAY WITH IT AT THE VERY START? HOW LONG DID IT TAKE UNTIL IT GOT TO BE SECOND NATURE? I’m not yelling those questions…..just did caps so you wouldn’t lose them in the message. I NEED to exercise. I’ve got hip issues and tight, weak muscles on the bad side. I walk with a noticeable limp and I’m only in my mid 50s I can start doing something but I NEVER can stick with it.😢 I do have a lot of stress, and have 2 high school daughter’s homeschooling…… Please tell me how you started, or help me get a grip on this in any way you can. I don’t have a loop in the house like you do. I do have a treadmill but it’s so boring , even if I watch bonanza reruns on YouTube. Plus my treadmill is in the dining room and always covered with stuff…..boxes, bread, etc etc. Thank you.

Lastisbest, I’ve been on FatSecret for over 5 years, and it wasn’t until last October that I finally started exercising. I started with 1/4 of a mile, four different times during the day. At the end of each 1/4 mile, I would be panting and dripping with sweat. It was such a little distance that I could the mile even on my worst days. After about a month of doing it EVERY day, i really didn’t want to break my winning streak. I did that until I wasn’t winded anymore, and then I increased to walking 1/2 mile at a time but still only 1 mile a day. I think it was about 2-1/2 months before I increased to 1.5 miles, then very gradually: 2, 3, 4 5 and finally 6. I didn’t start walking a mile at a stint until I was doing 3 miles a day. Now, with the exception of the day I had my knee surgery, and for the 2 weeks after, I have walked at least a mile a day for ONE YEAR tomorrow. After surgery on 7/27, I started with 1/2 mile with the walker and continued until I was back up to 6 miles a day. Very occasionally, I’ll only be able to get in 3 miles due to bad pain or a flurry of unexpected things requiring my time. But, it’s always at least a mile. Someday, maybe I’ll be able to say I’ve walked every day for 5 years! Hope that helps! My suggestion would be to clear off the treadmill and commit to walking 1/2 mile every day until that becomes easy. Best wishes on starting tomorrow!

Thank you for replying. I know what you mean by not wanting to break a winning streak. I’m doing that in Duolingo the language app. My daughter and I are learning a little German and I e got 109 day streak so far. One thing that might help is rewarding myself for walking or exercising….. but not sure how. Can’t be food! Right?! Lol I did walk sometimes and I’d watch bonanza reruns. But for 1/4 mile it’s not worth looking up an episode. I think I’ll try that tho….just do 1/4 mile at a time. I did try to start a stretching (for my tight hip) and a lil bit of exercise……like maybe 5 mins exercise total, plus the stretches. I’m gonna try to do baby amount of exercise to to build the habit. Today will e day 3 on exercise, lol. I can’t guarantee I’ll walk today but will at least my baby exercises. I’ll endeavor to clear off the treadmill tho today. Thanks for your input.
