Katsolo's Journal, 30 Dec 23

Getting there, but ever so slowly. Blob is a stubborn monster. Woke up to actual rain this morning, which is supposed to continue through the weekend. Hoping it blows over by tomorrow afternoon. Ended up working most of yesterday so catching up on things in the house this morning. Gonna do some cardio, hope it clears up enough to walk dogs and prep for tomorrow night.

Lili ate another power cord last night. I have bitter apple spray and some woven cable covers, any other ideas? I’m going to start putting them up, but I have a feeling she’ll just move on. This is her second one for my laptop, she’s also hit a couple random ones. She has tons of chew toys. This is because I left to go shopping. If I have to crate her, I will. Sadie did this when she was young, but beyond teething, she ate furniture and my good rugs. She grew out of it.

Weekend rules, enjoy the day.

Flexible metal conduit

Yeah, I bought some metal braiding, but I think the conduit is probably the way to go.

I was gonna suggest the metal braiding well. She may grow out of it, unless she is doing it to punish you for leaving her ..,❤️

Does she go after all cords? Cell phone cords ... and are both ends attached or is one end just hanging, sitting? Could be the current? I ask this because I almost decided to purchase stock in power cords 😬 😂

Looking at the leads that are attached to the dogs, they look very similar to charging cords. My guys don't chew power cords, but I have found that they will chew up their leads if I leave them within reach. They get so excited when I take the leads out because they know they get to leave the yard so it's not like they dislike them or anything. Maybe she wants to go out when you are gone and the cords reminds her of one of the things she needs to have when going out, with the other being you. Our Missy girl has stopped chewing anything inside the house.....in the yard, well that's a whole different ball of wax. She chews up ANYTHING, including my wooden rocking chair rockers on the front porch.

It’s hard to tell what is going on but my first instinct would be to have a vet check her dental health. Has she dropped all her baby teeth, does she have any gum issues, cracked tooth, a tooth coming in against another ? All pets often find chewing on something with a hard gum like pliable substance comforting and pain relieving. If she doesn’t have any of those issues I would give her a 12” piece of garden hose to chew on. Make sure she doesn’t swallow. Like others said sometimes that behavior is from relieving anxiety or stress which over time does diminish. If it’s her way of relieving stress and anxiety that’s a good thing and not always bad. Finding a way she doesn’t chew up your power cords you gotta figure out. Good Luck !

Happy 2024,Kat!!

Thanks, Eva, you too! Lili does have a dental condition where the enamel didn’t form completely on all of her teeth (she likely had distemper as a puppy), I’ll have to ask the vet if that’s what drives the chewing. She has tons of toys, soft, hard and in between, but she likes the power cords. The leashes get put away, lose a couple of those and you learn. She also ate the Kong that survived four other dogs. I’m thinking maybe a Kong with PB. Don’t worry, I won’t eat it, the dogs have their own jar. Ordered the metal braiding. She’s a trip.

Wow, eating a Kong is no minor feat. I am convinced that you are able to train her not to chew on electrical wires and, above all, I hope that this condition will not be painful for her.

I remember Bobby chewing on a wall corner when he was about a year old. He also chewed the legs of a nightstand and corners of a coffee table I had just paid $500 to have refinished. The beautiful quilt on my bed and at least 5 slippers. Then it was like a light switched turned off and never chewed anything again. So glad he never discovered power cords

My guys like chewing stuff with strings, then I see them put a paw on the pieces stuck in thier teeth, I always wonder if they are using it as dental floss, maybe she thinks the cords will go down between her teeth. Hmmm try giving her a couple of pieces of floss to chew?

I buy the big knotted ropes for them to play tug of war with, they spend more time chewing on it than they do playing tug of war.

She has the big knotted ropes, she has antlers and rubber things in various states of destruction. After literally flying around the house this morning, she’s settled behind me sleeping, resting for the next wave.

Do you still have Summer?

I do, Fritzy. She’s been eating salmon from my hand all day which is huge progress.

I posted her for you, Fritzy. She’s still very shy, but so happy outside.

Thanks Kat! I'm glad she is still with you. It looks like she gets along with the other dogs.
