Debbie Cousins's Journal, 18 Feb 21

Sigh. Going ahead and recording the gain this morning, as it's been UP for three days now! I'm only 1/2 pound down from where I was SIX days ago. Don't know what I'm doing wrong. Been keeping my macros almost perfectly at 70% Fat, 20% Protein and 10% Carbs (under 25 Net) every day.

Did NOT drink my water yesterday (but it didn't seem to make any difference when I DID drink it the day before). Well, maybe it DID make a little difference, because my left knee was hurting yesterday, and it hadn't been when I was drinking the water every day. I will be sure to drink it today, since I had the High-Fiber One-Minute Flax Muffin for breakfast (12.9g Fiber). That makes for a very high-calorie breakfast, though, and I'll be probably over my RDI for Calories. I've been keeping them between 1,300 and 1,600 every day.

Any advice from you Ketoers? I've been keeping my Macros right at 70% Fat, 20% Protein and 10% Carbs (25 Net) almost every day. I'm still registering in the low end of the "optimal" Ketone level, But I had ONE day when I was just in "Light" Ketosis (after having 31g Net Carbs the day before).

Right now, at 242.5, I'm actually one pound BEHIND where I am supposed to be to accomplish my goal of losing 60 pounds in six months. I need to be losing 1/3 of a pound a day, every day; 2.6 pounds a week, every week; 10 pounds a month, every month in order to reach my goal. I don't have time for these delays. I'm starting to get discouraged.

You're not doing anything wrong. One thing you might try is to extend the time between meals. If we keep a continuous flow calories going we also keep a continuous flow of insulin into the blood stream. Insulin is how the body stores fat. We cannot store fat and burn fat at the same time. The body will choose to burn any glycogen first, and if insulin is still in the blood, then no fat burning can occur. Stretch the time between eating. We eat--which puts sugar in blood--which causes insulin to flow to deal with the blood sugar--insulin stores it as sugar (glycogen) in muscles and liver, or as fat in fat cells--fat burning must remain on standby. Next the body uses the glycogen as needed, until that's gone, then it will burn fat. If we keep a continuous or frequent flow of sugar/insulin in the blood it prevents or slows down fat burning. I could be wrong, but I understood ketones in the urine are evidence the body is burning fat. When you see that then is a good time to stretch that as much as you can, because every minute without food is another minute your body is burning fat. That's the beauty of IF or fasting. Keto does not work for me. Keto and fasting does, so far, even if it is simply fasting between meals. I fast until noon, have my meal, then fast until dinner, have that meal, then fast until the next day. So far so good.

I think weightloss is not linear so just keep going and trust the process. The only thing I wold says is pay attention to food that is not keto. If you eat high carb food it may throw you off keto even if you keep your number low. and you will be going back and forth so legumes, cereals and rice are not the best choices. Keep experimenting. Maybe get some almond meal and have some fun with that if you need changes.

The true goal of losing weight is not giving up and being totally patient. People start dieting and then give up - they’re not patient - you’re doing really good, keep going!!!😊👏👏👏👏👍

I agree with Dlynngardner. A single high carb food can increase insulin and kick you out of keto so better to get carbs from just veggie and long periods between meals is also desireable for weight loss. With a high fat meal, I can wait longer to eat. And total calories do count-enough but not too much. Oh too much protein at one meal could also kick us out of ketosis. Also, even when the scale doesn't show a loss you can still be losing fat which will eventually show on the scale. And water helps flush out the fat, aids elimination and helps the joint pain and SF sodas don't help for a lot of reasons. Research shows increased weight for sugarfree soda drinkers. Artificial sugars feed our sugar addiction. So like any drug, abstinence works best in the long run but detoxing can be quite uncomfortable.

The only thing I can think of is I noticed you are eating the atkins bars. For some reason I used to gain (or not lose) when I ate a lot of sugar alcohols. Don't know why but did much better when I stuck to protein and veggies...

Sugar can trigger you to be hungry.

Debbie, I would skip the muffin number one! I would try to incorporate some non root veggies! I really don't think 77% of your diet from fat is good! Look at my menu sometime!

MCT oil. Also when on full keto I can’t eat anything but meat, eggs, broccoli & cabbage. Literally. Or don’t lose. Coffee , creamer & MCT oil. When not on keto must keep calories super low. But to each their own. 🍀

@Sheilabutler428, I like MCT oil for instant fuel when I am in ketosis and desire an instant boost, but there lies the problem with it too. I understand, MCT (medium chain triglycerides) oil turns into almost instant ketones in the body. If my body is burning easily consumed MCT oil/ketones for fuel it is not burning stored body fat ketones. At least with other forms of oil the body has to break them down into fatty acids (short, medium or long chain triglycerides) before the body can use them as fuel.

You have had a really good February friend 💪💪 I have been slacking with my water too!! I know better, and then I just fall off. I need to be more mindful of getting in my 💦 daily. I finally decided to change my goal weight and work on losing 5-10 lbs before lowering it again. I’m hoping that will give me the push I need. You got this💜💚

I totally agree with DLynneGarner IF will rest your bodys digestive system and you will feel better! It takes a while to adjust but for me it is a new way to look at my body and MIND to know that I will not starve from one meal to the next and I then plan and make good choices for my meals. Good luck!

I kinda already DO Intermittent Fasting. I eat dinner at 4:00pm and then don't eat anything after that. I go to sleep at 6:30pm, and I don't wake up until 5:30 or 6am, so I sorta "fast" every day for 13-1/2 to 14 hours. Is that enough to count as IF?

I've been looking for an article I had read that I found interesting. It gives a few different scenarios to IF, I finally found it. I've tried different ways in the past just because I like to shake things up a bit... https://www.womenshealthmag.com/weight-loss/a29349587/intermittent-fasting-schedule/

How is your calorie deficit? Are you eating enough or too much? With keto, your body burns stored fat so you probably eat fewer calories because you don't need them. Watch any grains, fruits etc and divide up protein.

I read the article, @Rckc - thanks. @ruthe1213, I haven't been eating any grains (except 1/4 cup of rice a few days ago - the day I went over on my Net Carbs), no fruit, protein at each meal. I appreciate everyone's input. Though I'm impatient for immediate results, I know that in the past Keto has worked for me over the long haul. Tomorrow will be Day 15, and I think if I persevere, I'll see the weight loss I'm looking for. If NOT, by the time I've been on it for a month, I'll recalibrate and decide on a new course to steer.

Sorry you are struggling. You sound stressed out. That can be a trigger to your body and it’s reacting by hanging onto to every calorie. Life is tough, we just got to be tougher!

Have you heard of Amanda Rose and her "Ridiculously Big Salad" book, or her "Eat Like A Bear" community or support group? Or her "Eat Like A Bear 3 Day Challenge"? She lost 140lbs and has kept it off using her method of OMAD, or one meal a day, which includes a really big low carb salad. Even if a person only followed the 3 day challenge you could break a stall. I really do think this is a safe way to actually lose more than 1lb a week, but it means only eating one very low carb or keto, 500-800 calorie, meal per day. She has several videos on Youtube, but here is her website: https://eatlikeabear.com/3-day-challenge/ The challenge is free, to participate requires and email address. She does eventually invite you to join her ELAB group for more or to buy her new book, but there's plenty on Youtube and elsewhere for free to figure out the jist of it all. If you haven't already seen it you might find it interesting.
