Debbie Cousins's Journal, 23 Mar 21

Drank less water yesterday. Only 1/2 pound lost this morning. Total so far for the fast, though, is 14.5 pounds. On day #11. Yesterday was a hard day. Had heart burn, which concerned me a bit, but then I got to the point in Book #6 (which I finished yesterday) where it said that heartburn was one of the most common side-effects of fasting.

I was very tempted yesterday to end my fast today (after completing ten full days). I asked God about it and called my best friend, and we three decided that I should go "just one more day," and if I can get through today, maybe I'll be able to make it to my goal of 14 days. The Lord has made it SO easy for me on this fast that it would be a shame to quit before I've "reached the mark." BUT, if I have any troubling or abnormal effects from it, rest assured that I will go back to eating.

I'm really praying that fasting will break my addictions to eating and to Diet Coke. Thankfully, I haven't "mourned" the loss of Diet Coke as I have in the past when I've given it up. It had a very strong hold on my life, and I used it to take the place of God when I was worried, stressed, anxious (and also when I was celebratory, bored, thirsty, hot). Basically any occasion (or NO occasion) was when I drank it - always a cup of it in my hand. Strong ties of addiction that I'm praying God will break, because I KNOW it is bad for me, and that water is GOOD for me. Right now, I'm thinking that I will not have any Diet Coke in my home, but rather, only drink it when we go out to eat (which we rarely do), or when we have a celebration at someone else's home. That might add up to one time a week, or two at most, and only one serving at those times.

OH, to deal with my extreme boredom, I have been reading like a fiend this year. I'm happy to report that I finished reading through the whole Bible (King James Version) on 3/15, and I've started reading it through again in The Message (more contemporary) version. "Thy Word have I hid in my heart that I might not sin against thee." For any who are interested in reading the Bible through, I use an online site called Bible Gateway. Select "Reading Plans" and you can select from Old & New Testament (which gives a daily reading from both), or Chronological (which lets you read the books in the order they were written. They also have plans where you can just read the New Testament, or just have a daily reading from Proverbs. Great resource!

You got this Debbie! You can break the addiction through God's help, water is the answer. John 4:14 Jesus said to the Samaritan woman "but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life."

Thank you for your kind words on my journal. Very much appreciated. I can only admire your fast. I couldn't and wouldn't want to do it. We all have to do what works for us. I am glad that I am back with a better mindset than ever. Stay strong Debbie, you got this :)

You’re doing amazingly great! I believe that appetite (all kinds) is a matter of spiritual control. All the best on your journey!

Thank you for the info. I read the bible daily. I bought the life principles bible king James version. It is an easy read and explains everything plainly. I gained 1# today probably the rice. Lost 4 on the cabbage soup diet. Today new day. You have this Debbie!!!!

I replaced my Diet Coke habit with green tea. Worked like a charm in case you need it in the future. Haven’t had Diet Coke in 6 months.

I was a coke drinker for decades! I thought I could not break that habit too. But I have no desire for it at all now. You'll find, a point will come when even going to a restaurant, you will not desire any cola, especially a diet cola because it will taste like chemicals, almost like some kind of metallic cleanser or mineral spirits, not anything good or healthy. I did actually develop a taste for carbonated or sparkling water, just plain, nothing added, though lately I haven't been drinking it very often. But, when I want something fizzy I get a bottle of sparkling mineral water. Sometimes I like to make lemonade with it using real squeezed lemon juice and a bit of sweetener. Or I add mint or basil from my garden. Very refreshing, calorie free and no chemicals added, very satisfying and totally guilt free. You're doing awesome Debbie, I'm so envious. I'm trying out an alternate day, fasting mimicking, method this week. So far so good, I finally started losing again. I know you have a lot of mouths to manage besides your own so being able to fast and feed others is almost a miracle, so yes, it has to be the Spirit helping you. Thank you Jesus!

Awesome! Congrats! You are doing fabulous! Keep up the great work. I gave up Diet Coke in 1995. It was hard and really an addiction. Once in awhile I still think one would be a great pick me up but I’ve refrained. Have a Sunshiny Day!

Having said the above, I'm not recommending you try sparkling water yet. Breaking the whole habit right now is more important. They say it takes 21 days to stop a habit, 42 days to break the habit, and 64 days to totally dominate over or lose interest in a habit or stronghold. If you can make it 64 days with no cola, you can go forever without it.

You have done absolutely great! Congratulations. I want to "second" what DLynneGarner says. I would be afraid that having even 1 diet drink a week would keep the addiction going and make it more difficult for you to give it up. Also as I kept nagging about it killing the friendly bacteria in your gut causing a leaky gut. But I love you regardless of what you do. I am so proud of you hanging tough in your fast. It's wonderful. Come off it gently.

@woofwaggers, I am hopefully doing a 14-day water-only fast. I'm on Day #11 now. But, when I go off the extended fast, I will be doing Intermittent Fasting. Planning to have two days a week where I stop eating at 2pm one day and then don't eat until 3pm the next day. @Javedali, WOW! 26 YEARS without Diet Coke! That's very inspiring to me. @taparo, six months is GREAT! I've quit before, but I don't think I have ever gone a whole month. @Sarafinia, great work on the cabbage soup diet. Four pounds is exciting! Thanks for the encouragement. @DLynneGardner @Snowwhite100, thanks for the suggestion to go "cold turkey" on the Diet Coke. I might need to give it up altogether in order to truly break the addiction. Every time I say something like, "I'm only to drink two cans a day," I end up going back up to 2-liters in short order. @LISfifty, I also believe that yielding an addiction is a spiritual matter. I'm praying that God would give me the resolve I need to give up the addictions to food and to Diet Coke, and that I'll become "a former fat person!" @MeltMyGut, @dboza, @Shrewdness and @damablack13, thanks for your kind words of support! THANK YOU ALL!

It's nice to read that you are reading the Holy Bible and re-reading it, again. I always do that too. I also join Bible studies bc I enjoy discussing the meaning(s) with others and w/knowledgeable theologians. The King James version is my fave. I would like to own The Holy Bible via audio so I can listen to it while I take a nap, or go to bed, or while driving or just anytime I feel like listening to it being read. I do have my favorite books too that I enjoy with all of Psalms being my first fave bc they're songs. TAke care in all that you do and may God bless you and keep you safe & strong...Amen O:-)
