TDX00's Journal, 01 May 23

Some tendons in my wrist have decided to go on strike due to unfair working conditions. I started taking prednisone (a corticosteroid used to treat inflamation) a few days ago and my weight has been slowly creeping up since. I've tried to compensate by dieting perfectly, though every morning since has been a small disappointment at the scales. I'm hoping to only be on the drug for about a week, so hopefully the disappointment is only temporary. In the interm, i'll shave 100kcal off my daily and stay away from the salt - see if that helps.

oh dear that is going to be hard to keep the weight off with this drug, when I was in palliative care 18 years ago (very aggressive C,) they put me onto this drug when i was 38kg, i told them to stop it when i got to 50kg but they said no, if you take another nose dive at 50kg and loose 30kg again you wont make it.......by the time they took me off it I was the size of a horse with a massive appetite..Also beware of muscle deterioration with this drug it has this side effect on some people, even though it is a "steroid" which is supposed to build up muscles, my oncologist said the word steroid is like the word cereal, with many different forms under its banner name, like weetbix porridge etc,,they are all different and do different things...my muscles never came back like they used to be, and are still weak

Thanks for the insight flossy - sounds like you had a rough time of it there for a while. I'm taking my 4yo son away for his first real camping trip tomorrow, and I was expect my diet would take a hit, though with prednisone, 3 days of crappy food, and my superhuman ability to stack on impossible amounts weight overnight, I'm expecting I'll be back into triple digits when I get home. To be honest, I'd prefer the wrist pain over the weight gain, so I'll likely stop the drugs pretty soon.

You still need to do what doctors tell you, a gain will go again, in the big picture your overall health is the main thing, enjoy your time with you son, bonding and memory making <3

Don't worry too much about the weight gain, steroids can contribute to fluid retention...you will likely pee it out when you come off them.

What flossyflu said... 💯 plus you're young and otherwise fitter than you've been for a while... you know this is just another blip... From my recent unplanned experiment with a course of steroids 😬, 5 days x high dose and tapering for 5 days equalled 2 weeks of slight weight gain, followed by several days of plateau (that probably could be attributed to a day of wedding celebrations) and then a week of modest but consistent losses once more... I will say the hardest I found is that I was H-U-N-G-R-Y for the duration of the meds... hopefully yours won't have that effect on you...
